Incorrect book count in Calibre Library on Device

Hi all,

First, I have a Kindle Fire HD and I'm using Calibre 1.5 in case that information is relevant to my problem.

I noticed that when I'm looking at my library on the device, Calibre has the wrong total number of books listed. Upon further investigation, I noticed that in some cases, Calibre is counting books that I've deleted from the device.

I figured this out by searching for a few specific titles that I had deleted. When I entered each of those titles into the search bar one by one, it would turn green as if it had found each book, but no book was there of course.

In order to try to fix the problem, I've:

1. uninstalled and re-installed Calibre several times (and I did delete the .msi file after each re-install).

2. installed earlier versions of Calibre.

3. deleted all my books from the device and re-added them in small groups.

Nothing has worked, and right now it's showing that I have 5 extra books.

Related side problem: During all my experimentation, I discovered that when I search for the deleted books on the Kindle, one of them pops up under 'Photos.' I can't long press it to delete it, and not only that, but when I open the 'Photos' folder on the Kindle, or in the internal storage of the Kindle when it's connected to the computer, or using ES File Explorer, the 'Photos' folder is empty!! Please help, I'm so frustrated!

The search bar turning green does not mean a book was found, it only means the search expression was valid. If a book is found it will be listed.

Thanks for telling me, I'm embarrassed that I didn't know that about the green search bar!!!

Any idea why it could be displaying the wrong number then? I know it sounds like a tiny nitpicky problem, but I do have a good reason for wanting the correct number.

Note: on earlier versions of Calibre, the number of extras changes. It's 5 extra books on the latest version, but the difference has been as low as 3 extra books and as high as 10 on other versions. When it was saying 10 extra, I did find that some duplicate books had been created somehow, but that only happened once, and I've never found duplicates again.

Thanks for developing Calibre, by the way, it's awesome either way!

Every book that calibre displays exists as a file somewhere on the device. That location may not be visible in whatever app you use on the device to list books, for example, a cache directory or a directory from some other, now unused app. Or the file may be in a format that your app cannot read.

The only way to check is to go over every book calibre lists and see where it comes from (you can do that by clicking ont he book and seeing the path in the book details area ont he right).

Thanks again for your reply, I really appreciate your help!! I may have been unclear on something -- Calibre is not actually showing books that I've deleted, it's simply giving me a higher number of books than I actually have on the device (you know the black text in the left corner of screen after Calibre reads the device that gives the number of books on the device and the number of books which are selected, if any), and I can't figure out where the higher total number of books is coming from.

I was guessing that it was coming from books I deleted just because I know of at least one deleted book that still shows up in searches on the Kindle as well as showing up in the green search bar in Calibre, but you cleared up my misconception about the green search bar.

I don't use any Calibre related or book collection related apps, just the full Calibre program on my computer without any additional plug-ins or anything. I have the ES File Explorer and the Evernote app on the Kindle, and that is all. The Kindle isn't rooted or modified in any way unless you count having Flash installed as a modification.

I now think the problem must be with the completely weird file structure within the Kindle, which is somehow hiding book files and not letting me get to them to try to delete them once and for all.

Edited to add: Calibre does add new notes from Evernote as books but I can always find those and delete them so that is not the cause of the higher number either.

Are you saying that the number of books in the book list is different from the book count shown at the bottom of the screen?

Yes, that's the problem exactly! I'm sorry, I must've sounded like an idiot trying to explain it before. It's not a huge problem and doesn't negatively effect Calibre's functionality in any big way, but I just wondered if I could do anything to fix it.

Hmm, that's odd, I can't think of anyway that could happen. Does the count mismatch immediately after you connect or after you do some operations: sending/deleting/etc.

Immediately after, and I haven't added or deleted any books in a few weeks as I've been trying to figure this out.

Try running calibre in debug mode and post the output after you device is connected (right click the preferences button) also post a screenshot of the main calibre window.

The debug log and the screen shot are attached (see reason for editing). The number of books that Calibre says are on the Kindle changes, but today it's saying I have 529 books. I am absolutely positive that I only have 524.

You should know that I know that Calibre counts the Amazon Welcome and the Amazon Prime documents as books and it always has.

Also, the Oxford Dictionary that the Kindle comes with has never showed up in Calibre before I installed v. 1.5 and now it does.

So, that accounts for three extra books, but I have no idea where the other extras are coming from.

If you scroll down to the end of the list are there 529 books listed? If so then the books that make up the difference are listed.

Hopefully you and Kovid can sort this out.

Look through the debug log you will find your extra books, for example:

I saw the Evernote in the debug log yesterday, but there was no visible Evernote showing in the Calibre window at all.

Here is a screen shot and debug log from today and there's no Evernote in the debug log today, but there are still 529 books.

I do always delete an Evernote when it shows up in Calibre, and doing so reduces the book number by one, but it's still never the correct number.

Please let me know if I am being unclear again, and thanks again for all your help!

Edited to add: Is it possible that Calibre is counting old Evernotes that I've already deleted because the data is stuck in the cache? If so, how can I clear out that old data since it's not visible in the Calibre window?

That location may not be visible in whatever app you use on the device to list books, for example, a cache directory or a directory from some other, now unused app. Or the file may be in a format that your app cannot read. The only way to check is to go over every book calibre lists and see where it comes from (you can do that by clicking ont he book and seeing the path in the book details area ont he right).

It's not a huge problem and doesn't negatively effect Calibre's functionality in any big way, but I just wondered if I could do anything to fix it.
