Issue resolved, see below - IE issue not the source
I tried to update my Epub copy of the Calibre Manual from the website today (http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/) but the link EPUB format in the line "An ebook version of this user manual is available in EPUB format, AZW3 (Kindle Fire) format and PDF format." downloaded a file named calbre.zip. This file seems to contain mainly html files relating to the help topics and not the expected "calibre.epub" I had before. The AZW3 download reads fine in Calibre. If you've still got an original copy of the "calibre.zip" file, just rename the extension on the file to ".epub" and it should be fine.
Epubs are zip files with certain mandatory files placed inside. So long as those internal files comply to the necessary specification/scheme, then the extension can be changed at will without difficulty. Hmm... well... I think Windows questions whether you really meant to change the file extension, but otherwise you're fine. |

Under the covers an epub file is in ZIP format and in this case Internet Explorer thinks it knows better than you what the file should be called. ![]() |

Nice catch Itimpi. I would never have noticed that as I'm using Firefox.

Looks as if that is a possibility at the server end (the epub itself appears correct for content type to these inexperienced eyes).
Chrome, which I hardly ever use but now tried for this file, for me, also downloads it as a zip, as does IE. I don't have that other web browser to try, whatever it is called ![]() |

I used Chrome 29, IE 10 and Firefox 24 and they all downloaded the file as calibre.epub.
