Issues w Sleepcover / battery life
Hey all,
I am using a Gecko cover for me Kobo Glo and until recently, I used the SleepCover function. However, from time to time I noticed that all of a sudden the battery has completely drained. In settings, I deactived "auto off" and "auto standby" in order to only use the Sleepcover function (which definitely worked). To get rid of the battery drain, I activated "auto off" function and set it to 60 minutes. But every time I set the Kobo to sleep (i.e. by closing the cover) and I open it again the next day, the whole system has shut down. Nothing like that happens in a shorter period of time (i.e. sleep working properly). So the issue is twofold: a) sudden battery drain with sleepcover when "auto off" disabled b) kobo turns off when it should be in standy over a longer period of time with sleepcover and "auto off" enabled Any ideas / hints? FW 2.8.1. Hope the description is kinda useful.. Last edited by AsbachAlex; 09-19-2013 at 03:56 PM. |

If I recall correctly, it can be caused by having any sort of obstruction on the screen (I think?) which causes the IR sensors to remain active. Have you checked to make sure there's nothing touching the screen?
That may be wrong, my memory is rusty but I feel that this had come up before as a problem. I don't have this problem on my Glo (w/sleep cover & 2.8.1). |

As buffaloseven indicated, the problem of the battery draining too fast, is probably an obstruction to the IR sensors that keeps it awake. Try using the switch, waiting 10 seconds, then closing the cover. As for the 2nd problem, that is what "auto-off" is supposed to do!! Change auto-off back to never, then set the "auto-sleep" to 60 mins, if that's the time frame you want. Auto-off set to anything other than the "never" setting will shut the whole system down/power off. Even if your kobo is already in sleep mode. |

If you open a sleep cover and don't touch the screen for something like 30-60 seconds it will go back to sleep. This is a very trickly problem to rectify; they do it in case the sleep cover gets bumped open in a bag or something like that. It'd be nice if perhaps they lengthened it to 90 seconds or something like that.

As buffaloseven said, this is "normal" behaviour. The workaround is to do quick VERTICAL (up or down) swipe on the screen. This lets it know there is someone using it without actually opening any menus or turning a page (unless you're in the library view).

For the battery drain, I've discovered with my own cover (Coverup) that, in fact, the cover's magnet was not perfectly touching the Kobo. The cover itself was movable. The move was really tiny (1 or 2 mm, not noticeable if you don't pay close attention) but it was enough for the Kobo to permanently switch between sleep and normal. This was draining my battery.

Hmmm, yesterday I just opened the cover again and the Kobo was shut down.
I grunched, booted it and started reading. I read several pages but all of a sudden, it turned off again. Any ideas? Auto Standby is turned off Auto Shutdown is set to 60 Mins |

Any chance the magnet is too strong and the cover is shutting the device down when it's folder behind the reader?
What happens if you disable the auto sleep cover setting? |

I wouldn't say that the magnet is strong at all.
I can disable it, but the normal sleep function somehow doesnt seem to work. I.e. when I pull the switch swiftly, it turns off the device instead of putting it to sleep... |

Update:
Yesterday evening, I removed my Gecko cover and turned all auto-xy options off (ie auto-sleep, auto-shutdown, sleepcover). Funnily, the Kobo still continued to put itself to sleep or turn itself off, or freezed. This definitely hasn't been that worse with older firmwares. Reading experience was none existent. I then was pissed and turned the device to standby (which worked). After a couple of minutes, I noticed that the device turned itself off (without auto-shutdown enabled). When I woke up in the morning, the device was at the homescreen, turned on. This is driving me nuts... edit. The Kobo even turns itself off when connected to the PC. edit2. I just did a factory reset and the Kobo is still turning itself off randomly... Last edited by AsbachAlex; 09-28-2013 at 02:49 AM. |

OK, sounds like you have a hardware issue. Time to go for warranty service. The earlier posts could be explained by expected behaviour, but what you're describing now is definitely not normal.
