Kindle for iOS v4.0

Quote:
Major Update Includes Band-New Design & Collections! Kindle Version 4 is beautifully redesigned around the themes of deference, clarity and depth. Collections give customers the ability to simply and easily organize their libraries.

Updates include:
* Collections: Easily categorize books, docs and magazines with a few easy taps
* Flatter style controls create a sharp, new customer experience
* Translucency effects keep constant connection between customers and their content
* Slide-out menus in Library and Reader that combine key controls and glide to the touch
* Performance and Stability Improvements
I'm not sure what a 'theme of deference' is but I will take them at their word.

Still the margins are too large and no active TOC.

Is 4.0 for iPhone, iPad, or both? Have you installed it? I cannot find this version in the App Store. I can only find 3.9.2 which is already installed. Of course if Amazon just got it approved today it will take a while to show up in the App Store.

EDIT: Never mind, it shows up in the App Store now. I was able to install 4.0 on my iPad, but not on my iPhone. On the iPhone the App Store shows 4.0 as available, but when I click on it it merely opens my 3.9.2 Kindle app.

I think one improvement I see is that embedded fonts might be working now. Previously when you selected the Publisher Font option it displayed one of the loaded fonts rather than the embedded ones. I need to load a book that I'm sure has embedded fonts to test this.

Nope, my mistake, embedded fonts still don't display.

It appears my iPod Touch (4G) is not compatible with v4.0. Oddly, it was by browsing the list of App Store updates on it that I discovered v4.0 existed (it was listed there initially), but after updating everything Kindle is no longer in the Updates list and the app remains at v3.9.3. The Description in iTunes says v4.0 is compatible with anything that runs iOS6, including iPod Touch. So maybe it just needs to clear some cache and try again. Or maybe Apple's servers are a little overloaded. I might try calling Amazon CS to see what they have to say about it.

Unfortunately, after nearly 4 years it seems the thing is nearing the end of its lifespan. The battery seems to have lost significant storage capacity, apps tend to crash more than they used to. I'm not inclined to get a new iPod Touch, but that leaves me only with the option to get a smartphone of some sort.

Same thing here. I think the app store is having some glitches today as I had another app that had an update, but it didn't show up in the update list (neither did Kindle), but I could manually update it by going to the app's store listing (unlike with the Kindle app).

I agree the App Store is acting wonky today probably related to the iOS 7 release. Earlier today I saw the App Store icon showing 4 updates available so I opened it and nothing was displayed under available updates.

I love how the collections work! Maybe we will get this kind of collections on the Kindle itself.

App store seems to be working okay for me now. Kindle, along with 5 other updates, just showed up and downloaded.

I only played with the Kindle app a little, but the collections function is certainly easy to use.

Almost 9:00 pm CDT and I am finally able to install 4.0 on my iPhone.

The Collections is a nice addition. I haven't played with it much either, but I did notice that it brought in all the Collections I have had on the last few and current Kindles. That is really cool.

Would be great; and for Android too... but I'm not holding my breath.

I wonder why it took Apple so long to add this feature?
