Couldn't help myself - bought the 505

During a recent business trip to Seattle I wandered into Borders to pick me up some gift cards (I am based in the UK) for my 500.

The little display stand was in exactly the same place where I had attempted to buy a 500 a year or so again (no luck then - had to get a friend to buy and get it off him when I was in Orlando later that year). Of course on top of the stand was a shiny 505 - I had a wee look and thought, "sod it, why not". Only 300 bucks - which is only 150 pounds in real money!

Got the "blue" one as they had no silver. I knew these were out, but to be honest not paid much attention to them as was happy with the 500.

But I'm very glad I got the 505 now - the contrast is much better, although I haven't found the page turning much quicker. The battery seems to last a bit longer, but this may be my imagination.

I prefer the left hand page turn keys but not so sure about the the ones on the bottom right especially seeing as the case is more intrusive. I'm a bit pissed that it doesn't work with the cradle/charger thing I bought for the 500, but I suppose that's no biggie.

Not sure what I'm gonna do with the "old" 500 yet...

Hi fekg. Good move on the 505. I got one back in January and am very pleased.

If you find the cover that came with the 505 not to your liking, you might try one of the other accessory covers. I use the MEdge Executive cover for normal reading and their Leisure cover for the gym or at the beach. The Leisure model has a padded frame the 505 nests in and the front cover is is clear plastic. And it zips shut so that, although it's not waterproof, it is water resistant. And you can insert the 505 in with the screen towards the back which gives it even better protection when, for example, it's in your carry on bag.

The executive cover is also padded although it doesn't zip shut and thus is not water resistant. Anyway, I've come to like it as well.

You can check them out at www.buymedge.com And I confirmed the other day that they do ship to international addresses and do accept, um, real money.

Enjoy your 505. If you're looking for a hard case, I found one on ebay that will protect your reader where a soft cover won't (item number: 260220717684). I haven't picked one up yet, but I'll probably get it before going backpacking this summer.

Kind regards,

Plus, I sincerely hope, the £26 or so in VAT when you declared it at customs on your way home?

Harry, don't be teasing your countryman. You all are so disoriented from driving on the wrong side of the road, it's easy for you to forget things like VAT.

Do you have to declare everything you buy in the States? What happened if you bought it from eBay and you traveled out of the country with it.. Do you have to pay twice?

Apart from tobacco, alcohol and perfume, you're allowed to in other goods worth up to £145 without paying any Customs Duty and VAT. If you bring in goods worth more than £145, you must pay Customs Duty and VAT on the full value of the item or items that take you over that threshold.

When you pay, they'll give you a receipt which you should keep as proof of payment.
