Can epub files communicate with a server?

We are having an issue where a client needs to know if we can push updated material to an epub file. Any response is will be much appreciated.

This ePub file itself can't, but you could presumably set up some sort of mechanism for updating the ePub file on a remote server. Is the server on which the file is stored one that's under your control?
