From the press release:
Quote:
Amazon today introduced Kindle MatchBook, a new benefit that gives customers the option to buy—for $2.99, $1.99, $0.99, or free—the Kindle edition of print books they have purchased new from Amazon. Print purchases all the way back to 1995—when Amazon first opened its online bookstore—will qualify once a publisher enrolls a title in Kindle MatchBook.

Hm. An e-book version of "AutoRip" for CD's :P

Nice. If I had bought paper books at Amazon, I'd probably use this.

Interesting, I wonder if it will be available outside the US though. Knowing Amazon, it's probably doubtful.

Because the books available are never the same on .com and .co.uk, they seem to treat them completely differently.

It depends whether or not a book has different UK and US publishers. Some do; some don't. Given that it's the publisher who has to opt in or out of this programme, if it is rolled out internationally it'll probably be the case that there'll be different book selections in different countries.

I haven't purchase a lot of paper books for myself from Amazon, but I've purchased a fair number for gifts. It will be interesting to see which of those become available.

Although I wonder sometimes if I'll ever read a paper book again, my wife still reads them almost exclusively so an option to bundle a cheaper digital copy will be welcome. I wonder if the offering will include any of the major publishers.

I do much the same now with Amazon's Whispersync for Voice option, buying the ebook for me and the audiobook for my husband. The major publishers are on board for the discounted audiobooks, so I wouldn't be surprised if they jump on this too, at least for backlist books.

Interesting. While looking at a book a few days ago on Amazon, an alert appeared on my screen that I purchased the book in 1998! I wondered why Amazon would keep records going back 15 years of my book purchases - now I know why.

It's always done that. I don't think it has anything to do with this new initiative.

I find it very useful. On several occasions I've gone to purchase a book, CD, or DVD, only to be told that I've already bought it.
