Aura HD problems

Twice in the last few days my Aura has become unresponsive while reading. Everything's going fine, then suddenly the page won't turn...it freezes for no apparent reason. Trying to put it to sleep or turn it off does nothing, the paperclip trick does nothing, so I reset to factory defaults and it lasted a couple days, but this morning it stopped working again. I had to use the paperclip again but yet again even that didn't work. Left it plugged in a couple hours and it rebooted. It sat here all day and tonight I picked it up to read. It's in a Kobo sleep cover, and it was sleeping with the book cover showing when I opened the cover. It woke and was on the home page, I tapped the book I wanted to read, the book opened...and I couldn't turn the page. Holding the power button makes the screen go white. Paperclip got it to act like it was booting, but it got stuck on the fourth square.

Firmware is 2 8.1. Is it time to call customer service or have I overlooked something? It has no memory card installed and about 250 books on the device. Anyone have any ideas?

Is this all happening with the same book? Different books? Are they kePubs, ePubs or kePub.ePubs (or various formats)?

I recently had a problem where whatever book I had been reading and then performed a sync would open to a blank page (with only page info showing) and lock up the device, but any other book would work just fine.

There are epubs on the device that I bought from Books on Board before they folded (loaded from ADE on my PC) but these were both kepubs. (They're listed as Kobo epubs and were downloaded from the Kobo server during a sync). One of them I just bought this morning. Now that you mention it both times were after a sync.

I have noticed that from time to time the Aura (2.8.1fw) will say loading chapter... With no result. No icons on the top. So to fix this, I have had to tap where the home icon is, and wait for the Aura to go to home screen. Open the book again and voila the chapter is back in full view. Only have seen this issue on the 2.8.1 firmware and only on the Aura.

I've had to do a factory reset 5 times in the last two weeks - always on pubs converted to kepubs. While reading a page turn is unresponsive. Nothing gets it moving except a factory reset with the hardware buttons.

I've just downgraded to 2.6.1 and will see if this deals with the problem.

I have had it happen once on an epub. Firmware 2.6.1.

I just put it aside and used another reader. Less than 1/2 hour it was fine again except the book had lost its place and said unread. I found the place because I was ble to note it when it was frozen, and continued the book with no more problems. It was the exact same place, same words at top of page etc. SO I cannot see it as a faulty book.

Sounds pretty similar to my experience. If it happens on 2.6.1 I'll try the let it sit thing. To be honest I've yet to see any difference between 2.6.1 and 2.8.1

I get this often with a Glo and 2.6.1b and calibre side-loaded kepubs. I forward a page and go back a page and it is than fine.

This is one of those bugs that needs to be ironed out. Surely it can not be that difficult for the Kobo coders to figure out.

Not quite the same thing I think? Mine locks up so I can't tap on anything and get a reaction.

Mine too, Brian. Totally frozen. Happened again two times since I posted the first message. I know I won't be taking the Aura as my only reader on any trips. It has never come back once from this state without being plugged in...being stuck on a 4 hour flight without anything to read would be a nightmare. Resetting to factory defaults every few days is not a viable option.

I would definitely call customer service. Mine has never had a problem booting with no SD card. Might not be relate, but sounds like you have a faulty unit.

Try tapping in the center of the screen as if your bringing up the menu at the top of the screen. Then tap where the home screen icon should be wait a few seconds and the home screen should pop back up.

Still a pain in the ass though regardless of how you look at it.

Very doubtful that its a faulty unit... it happens to too many units to be that. Most likely its again the crappy coding that Kobo Coders have wrought on us. perhaps they work for the Amazon Kindle project and are secretly sabotaging the competition.

Jack was correct that if the page is stuck on loading, try touching the top margin, which should evoke the menu there. Then touch the page itself. This seems to be an issue using the extended driver for calibre. Joel does not have an Aura to test on, btw.

Jack, I don't know why you would expect Kobo developers to fix something that shows up only when using the extended driver. The issue the OP is facing is different. I would follow up with Kobo and see if the device should be returned.
