I'm looking for suggestions for novels whose stories focus on a treasure hunt. Historical, present/modern day or fantasy are all fine, but preferably not science fiction or paranormal.
The classic Treasure Island is a good example, but also The Amber Room or even something like Indiana Jones (maybe a little less comedy-inspired, though). I'd also include The Da Vinci Code in the list, actually, though it's not exactly what I have in mind. Thanks for any suggestions and ideas! ![]() |

Take a look at James Rollins' Sigma Force series. The ones I've read all deal with ancient (religious) artefacts.

Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson deals with a teasure hunt that spans the past and present. It's great but its a pretty dense read and deals with a lot of other topics in and around the search for treasure.

Cryptonomicon was great if you like a little whimsy mixed with your history and philosophy. I loved the "Cartesian coordinates in a parking lot" method of dividing an inheritance.

Love Neal Stephenson and love Crytonomicon... But his endings suck. He writes great stories and then he ends with blah...

If you don't mind non-fiction I would recommend Ship of Gold in the Deep Blue Sea by Gary Kinder. It's one of the better non-fiction books out there.

A classic is "King Solomon's Mines", by Sir Henry Rider Haggard. One of the best adventure stories ever written.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
![]() I read Riptide recently, and it was a fantastic "Gosh, it's light outside again!" kind of book. Very gripping. |

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre by B. Traven is pretty good. However, it's about prospector's hunting unrefined gold rather than some valuables piled up by someone else. The prospectors have a few adventures in the process of finding and extracting the gold, but the main crisis has to do with how the gold affects them. The writing style is a bit dry, so if you can't handle it, you should at least watch the movie.
Unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be available as an ebook, at least not in North America. |

I loved this series for years and years.
BUT... I'd shy away from anything written after "Atlantis Found". In my own opinion, anything published after 2000 is just awful. My favorites of the entire series are "Sahara" (plese don't judge the book by the painfully horrendous movie!) and Inca Gold. Both have a great treasure hunting plot and tons of action. |
