Comic books on Kindle
work great!
![]() really, I'm glad they've gone for a guided view approach as pioneered by XComics for tablets: they show you first the whole page and, obviously it doesn't quite fit the small screen, then as you hit next page it actually leads you through a guided view through each of the panels in the page. lack of colors is a non-issue, at least for classic comic books before digital production of comics during the 90's led to painted, colorful comics: color was flat back then and still looks great on 16 shades of gray I bought Chris Claremont and John Byrne's epic "Days of future past" X-Men saga from the 80's and was blown away how well it reads on kindle. Byrne's finely detailed pencil shines through Terry's inks in all the original glory during zooms on each panel. great, truly great. reads much better this way than on LCD, hands down. only downside is download time: ebooks are usually about a few hundred KBs, if much. this seemed to weight in about 100MBs or so. ![]() at least, quality was preserved. well spent money on this classic from my teens... |

Is that how it's supposed to work for all comics? I know I tried an extract from Avatar: The Promise and it was just page by page and you could zoom in. It worked, but going through each panel would be nicer I think.

the guided view through each panel comes with the kindle edition for the aforementioned comic book I bought on the kindle store.
but have you tried double tapping? it activates this mode, though it shows you the first time you read a comic book... |

You are reading these on the Kindle Paperwhite?
If so, another good point for the reader! |

yes, bought it about 2 days ago. Then I read somewhere in the included manuals that it now featured guided view for comics and went on to try out.

Yep Kindles are great for comics/Manga. Many people think that 6 in screen is not enough but they are simply wrong :-P Most of content even don't need zoom if files are properly prepared.
When converting color images for Kindle I recommend experimenting with gamma correction. Standard 1.8 for gray-scale ones in most cases is too high. |

you can read unprepared comic books that don't feature guided view, but it's kinda awkward, specially because people who scan those usually maintain the original paper margins. clips those out and you get a much better and closer view of the page.
anyway, still prefer guided view... |

The 6" is better for manga (which usually comes in trades not much larger) than comics. Alas, the PW has way less storage than the Touch, as I've come to find after buying several volumes.

That doesn't save space, in my experience - using Mangle or MangaAI to resize the jmages and converting them to mono/greyscale doesn't save that much space with manga, especially since the PDF doesn't get to store them as vector data and can't improve the compression.
Plus, I bought them straight through Amazon, so they're KF8. |

As I said, I've bought manga through Amazon using KF8. Aka "Guided View enabled". My concern is the FILE size on the device, not how panels look on screen. Brainist was suggesting converting things to PDF to save space, and I was telling him why it doesn't work.

In order to read manga or comics on PPW, you have to resize images and cut border to make the book's margin is equal zero. For example a good manga is modified for Kindle

First of all - e-ink Kindles don't support Guided View. There is only Panel View support.
And using it require declaring location of every panel. So for homemade MOBI workload to do that is impractical. If you need Virtual Panel View use our KCC. It jumps from corner to corner with right reading order. But in most of cases it is not needed - Everything is readable without zoom if MOBI file was prepared correctly - Some samples (CC licence) on on our site: kcc.vulturis.eu Converting CBR to PDF is perfect method to completely screw your reading experience. That method even don't properly cut white-spaces not even mentioning other image improvements. About file size - Remember to hit MOBI files created by KindleGen with a KindleStrip. It will decrease file size ~50%. Last edited by AcidWeb; 08-12-2013 at 04:15 PM. |

I agree about the margins. Had they got rid of it, it'd be pretty readable without even guided view (or panel view whatever the terminology). Except, of course, for whole 2-page panels...
