ODPS client for kindle?
Is it actually possible to add an OPDS client to Liberator (or standalone)? Such as the most readers for Android have. At the moment I can acces my OPDS Server with the Kindle webbrowser, but on my K4NT the navigation would be better in a native app.
Or are there restrictions to access the internet on the Kindle with other applications? Last edited by NiLuJe; 08-07-2013 at 11:48 AM. |

Interesting. Never read about OPDS before. As for the question: Yes, it is possible. It's not something ready in a few minutes though. That would take work that some volunteer would have to do.

This looks like a possible starting point:
http://fbreader.org/content/fbreader-beta-linux-desktop Its in Debian, but not (yet) for ARM. @glimm: Give that application a test run on a lap/desk top machine, let us know if that (on a Kindle) would answer your interests. Edit: Not exactly a currently maintained project: https://github.com/geometer/FBReader But it should be possible to find what project(s) superseded it. AND Start your own topic thread. This is off-topic for this thread. Last edited by knc1; 08-05-2013 at 05:39 AM. |

Thanks for your answers.
Nice to know, that it's possible. FBReader is also a popular Android reading app. See here for some screenshots of the OPDS client: https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...l_opds_scanner I'm no developer, sorry ;-) But I can start a seperate thread for this, if someone would be interested to start a new project. Greetings! |

@knc1
I tested FBReader (Linux & Windows). There are some predefined OPDS catalogs included. But you can't add custom catalogs, as in the Android plugin. |

Even "porting" between ARM/Android to ARM/Linux as used on the Kindle is no small project. The source code I am looking at is that listed in the page you linked to above: https://github.com/geometer/FBReader...l-opds-scanner That plug-in is written in Java, and the multi-format readers here are written in Lua. Not a show stopper for the port of the functions provided, but a complete re-write of the plug-in code. The Kindle experimental browser is WebKit based. I don't know if Amazon disabled the "plug-in support" in their version of a web browser. Even if they didn't, this would also be a code re-write. Hence my questions about if the "feature set" is complete enough. Another thought - Check if the Midori browser supports an OPDS plug-in - - http://midori-browser.org/ The work on that browser here is close to being generally workable. I'll buy the OVP simulation engine: http://www.imperas.com/ovpworld http://www.ovpworld.org/models and: http://www.ovpworld.org/processor-mo...rtex-cortex-a8 That will bring an end to things like mysterious segfaults in a hurry. Last edited by knc1; 08-06-2013 at 09:42 AM. |

For me personally it would be important, because I have my own OPDS server running on my NAS using COPS.
But even witout custom catalogs it could be interesting for many other users. The feedbooks OPDS catalog is providing a lot of free public domain books in different filetypes. This and other catalogs made available with a nice interface directly on the Kindle would be a wonderful thing. Given that I'm not able to code myself, I don't want make demands, what to include and what not. ![]() Quote:
Thereby I wonder why the prefix of the thread is "K5". Especially for non touch devices such an app would be useful. |

Sometimes it is easier for a non-developer to give us an understanding of what they want by making contrasts. Like: I tried ..., I liked ..., I didn't like ..., I found .... missing. That is the reasons for our questions (or at least for mine). |

To be more precisely, the functioning should be pretty similar to this:
