New Calibre user

Hello my fellow calibre patrons,

I am new to calibre and have to frequently go abroad and my question is - can i intall calibre on 2 separate pc/laptops and will I be able to access my calibre library in both locations? similar to a cloud service like say...amazon's?

Basically one pc is in the US and other is a laptop based in India which basically avoids having me lug the device between the two countries. That is why I thought of asking the above question. It would make life so much easier too as all I would need to carry is my Kindle and be able to access my library while overseas! ;-)

Thanks,

D

The issue is that Calibre is not (yet anyway) multi-user. As a result two separate instances of Calibre accessing the same Calibre library simultaneously can lead to corruption.

Having said that, if you are very careful to make sure that you never have two instances of Calibre accessing the library at the same time a lot of users have reported success in storing their Calibre library in Dropbox.

Another possibility is to hold your calibre library on a USB drive, and use it in conjunction with Calibre Portable. That way you carry the library around and can run it on any Windows PC you have access to. This approach does not suffer from the risk of corruption as by its very nature you can only be running a single instance of Calibre against the library at a time.

thanks man i thought of that too but i am glad you confirmed my theory. don't think using the library in two places at the same time is an issue since i cant be in two places at one time! i think this should work fine then...i'll just copy my calibre library on a flash drive and carry it with me wherever i go.
thanks again.

If you also install Calibre Portable to the USB drive then you can use it on any Windows PC without the need to install Calibre to the hard drive of the PC.

If your library is very big, I would suggest a small (2.5" laptop type) USB Hard drive. The performance will be very good and the drive will fit in a shirt pocket (sans cord).
And having Calibre Portable installed on it is a big (you can still use the same Library with Installed Calibre. This will allow you access the Library from any Windows PC if needed with only the drive being present

You could also try using copy.com to sync your library to cloud. You would just create a shortcut to your regular library folder in the copy.com folder, it would sync to the cloud and would then sync and be accessible on laptop.

I do this with a portion of my library and so far so good.

Copy.com comes with 15gb free on sign up and you could use this referral link to get 5 more (full disclosure, I would get 5 more too).
And I use the portable/usb calibre on my second computer(s) too.love it
