Kobo Glo Frozen after 2.8.1 Update

Hi, my Glo froze on the recharge screen recently, so after all else failed, I had to do a factory reset. Then I installed the latest update via wifi from the kobo server. This lasted 2 days, before freezing while reading an epub, and strangely, the back light stayed on too. It's still frozen. The usual reviving methods - recharging, factory reset, using the paperclip button, using all buttons etc. haven't worked. My computer, a mac, does not see the device. When you move the power switch, you get a blue light on the led, rather than the previous green one, which lasts for about 8 seconds. Nothing else happens. I think I read somewhere that kobo have disabled the factory reset in recent firmware updates? Anyhow, is there anything i can try before sending it back?
Thanks

When something similar occured to me, i contacted the support and they told me to try holding the buttons light and power switch for less than 10 seconds.
This perform a factory reset and delete all books, but as you said, you already tried it, right?

Thanks. Good to know factory reset is still available. Yes, I've tried this reset for various time lengths. When the power switch is pulled, the blue light always stays on for about 8 secs. But nothing happens. The screen is still frozen on the book I was reading. I'm wondering, does are there any more radical solutions I could try? Plus if my mac can't see the reader, is it still possible other operating systems might? Cheers

If it froze while charging and hasn't been seen since, it's worth double-checking the old canard - a dud USB charging cable or port. Try a different cable in a wall charger for a few hours, if you haven't already. Also, what exactly is showing on the screen? If anything can you post a photo? A few "frozen" screens are smashed devices.

eta: sorry, just realised you said it was seen after that! Still, it's worth trying anyhow.

Also, are you making sure you pull, hold for ten seconds, and release the power button before you do the factory reset procedure? If the device is on (but it's not changing the screen because of the freeze), you have to turn it off before it will reset.

PS I'm thinking we should have a sticky that is _just_ for "How To Do A Proper Factory Reset For Each Device", so that we can just refer to that instead of typing it out (and probably forgetting something) each time.

Doubt it, unless you click on the "connect" prompt on the screen I don't think any machine will be able to see it.

Hi, I tried charging it with a phone charger, and with a different usb cable, using a different port. It appears to be charged, as the blue power led light comes on.

Anyhow, the factory reset technique I was following is:
"Hold the power switch in the off position for at least 10 second. You won't see any screen changes when you do this. The hold the light switch down while turning it on. The LED near the switch should start flashing. When it does, release the switch"

As said before, the blue light just goes on for 8 secs, then back off.

Re the frozen screen, it's stuck displaying the page of the book I was reading. There are no funny lines to indicate some sort of breakage. The quality is as per normal, though the background grey is perhaps a fraction darker than usual.

Cheers

Hardware factory reset for Glo and Aura HD.

Step 1: Hold the power switch in the off position for 15 to 20 seconds. This is to ensure that it is turned off. Longer doesn't hurt.

Step 2: Release the power switch.

Step 3: Press the light switch and hold it until step 5.

Step 4: Slide the power switch until the LED turns on and release it.

Step 5: Wait until the LED starts rapidly flashing (discoing) and release the light switch.

Hopefully, your device display will show that it is now doing a factory restore.

An alternative is to replace step 4 with:

Step 4a: Press the pinhole reset switch until the LED turns on and release it.

For the Touch, replace the light switch with the home switch.

Good luck!

Regards,
David

Hi, thanks, but sadly all the factory reset techniques aren't working. I wonder whether the light button or reset button may be defective? Anyhow, are there any other versions of the reset technique I might try? Many thanks

Hi, yes this is interesting that you had the same problem papymey. It really does appear as if factory reset has been disabled, or that the button/slider routine has been changed. I wonder if it is worth calling kobo about this? Or are there any other options? thanks

OK, I decided to take one for the team. With my Glo (2.8.1., sideloaded) powered off, I tried:

Paperclip reset: worked. Soft reset resulted.

Held down light button, activated power button: hard reset resulted. HOWEVER. The first time I did this, I didn't get a hard reset. I don't know why it failed the first time, and worked the second. Maybe just try a few times with different timing, and see what happens.

Light button works like a Flip-Flop, it's why reset works one time on two...
My Kobo was repalced yesterday by the saler Fnac in France, without any discussion.
