2.8.1 bug(s)

Hi

I have come across this bug with 2.8.1 on my Kobo Glo. Can anyone replicate?

If I am reading a book and go to the home page when I go back to my book (or any other book for that matter) all I am presented with is the header of the book and a footer which says Loading Chapter "X" : "Chapter Title" - Page "Number" (substitute text in "" with actual chapter numer, title etc. from book) and no text. To get the text to display I have to tap on the Book Title at the top of the screen to bring up the "Search Kobo etc. options", then tap in a blank space on the screen and the text will appear.

When text does display occassionally only half the text of the top and bottom line on the page is displayed.

I am reading epubs that have been "kepub'ed" via the Kobo Touch Extended Plugin in Calibre.

This seems to be the common factor with the reports of this problem so far. Does anyone have an example of a real kepub that causes the problem? I have tried about 40 on my Glo and haven't found any issues yet.

Someone did find a real KePub. They even linked to it. I'll see if I can find it.
EDIT: Found it! The book they linked to is http://www.kobobooks.it/ebook/Favole...EnZWdMA5Ww&r=1 (unfortunately only visible in "select countries").

Additional observations on this "bug", which may help someone resolve the issue

If you manually bookmark the page first, when you come back to the page from the home menu it displays OK
If the page only contains only italicised text when you come back to the page from the home menu it displays OK
When you get a blank screen, long pressing on the screen brings up the dictionary for the invisible word in that position (i.e. although the text does not display it is actually there, if that makes sense!)

A couple of items that I've noticed and been annoyed enough by to complain.

1. When I power cycle my Aura, the tiles on the home screen showing books on the external uSD card disappear so all I see are tiles for books on internal storage and the sync and reading stats tiles. When I use the library link and then return to the home screen, the Library tile appears saying every ebook on the external uSD card has been added and the tile for the book (if it was on uSD card) I was last reading appears. The tiles for other 6 or so books for which I have tiles on the home screen disappear into the aether.

2. When I edit an ebook to correct various errors and delete the ebook from the GUI or using Calibre and then re-add the updated copy from Calibre, the annotations from the old version are still present unless I power cycle the Aura after deleting the old version and before adding the updated version. Of course, the power cycle triggers my first complaint.

This is so annoying! This happened on my Glo while I was away from home tonight. Read three chapters, went to home to check on something, and then from then on, could not get past a blank screen as you describe. Even powering off and on did not correct it. I had to start a different book!

Considering some of earlier issues, my current issue set is not that bad. Annoying, though.

Is this for books on the SD card or main memory? For the main memory, the annotations file doesn't get deleted when you delete the book either from the GUI or calibre. I could fix it in calibre, but as it is consistent with the GUI, I haven't. Or at least, that's the excuse I am using

And if you are sending the book from calibre and not making any changes the the file structure or TOC, you can safely resend the book without deleting it first.

I think this has been around for a while, in varying degrees. I'm on a Glo with 2.6.1b and see this to varying degrees. Sometimes when I open a book, sometimes when I page to a new chapter, sometimes, the bottom line is half clipped.

I have the latest versions of everything on my Aura:

2.8.1 (sideloaded ) for the reader

0.9.41 for Calibre

2.0.2 for kobo touch extended

1.2.2 for kobo utilites.

I had given up kobo extended since I didnt like kepubs's general behaviour, so disabled the plugin, but kept it up to date.

But I have huge problems with annotations, so decided to try again for 6 books. For most it was a definite improvement, but for one, which I bought on ebooks.de (ex libri.de), I had the disasters described below : white page with "chargement en cours", forced reset thanks to which I had to reset my parameters, but the books were still there.

I also had surprises nobody mentioned, at least in this thread:

kobo created shelves corresponding to one custom column (but not the others)
when I cancelled the problem book, disabled the koboextended plugin, and sent the book anew to the reader, it was sort of a kepub: headings and pages within a chapter, but no pop-up notes.

I've looked for my book in the reader to check its full name, but I gave up: kobo created almost 500 shelves, by combining extinct tags with present ones, to store some 1800 books, some 500 of which have presently no tags.

Does anybody have similar problems?

Can you maybe describe how you have everything configured (and where).

For instance have you ensured that you have the same shelf columns defined in both Kobo Touch Extended driver and the base KoboTouch driver.

Do you have metadata management set to auto?

I haven't looked at the configuration for a while, and I don't understand everything. So here are my settings (roughly translated from the French):

read the metadata from the files in the reader
use subdirectories
the columns are tags, Etiquette (I wasn't sure which was right)
create shelves
eliminate empty shelves
smarten punctuation

I didn't select delete files not in manifest because I didn't know what the manifest was. Should I? Should I block Kobo analytics DB? Clean up epub Markup? I don't know what all those are so I didn't. All I know is I neverchanged it up to now, and the behaviour changed very recently.

Also I chose automatic metadata management in calibre, which is why I am surprised that former tags still govern the reader files.

This is for books on the SD card. The only books I keep on the internal card are those downloaded from Kobo. It's a bit annoying since I use the annotations to mark where I want to make changes so I end up with pages of annotations that no longer apply. What I find odd is that after a power cycle, the annotations are removed or orphaned.

I'll give that a try the next time I edit an epub without changing the file structure or TOC. I'm just editing the data fairly often so worth trying.

I just read through the blog entry that is for bug reports for the Kobo Extended driver. It would appear that this particular bug is most definitely an issue with the Hardware and not the Extended driver in Calibre. Please be aware this is the opinion of the Author of the driver and We have to respect his expertise in this matter and wait for Kobo to address this issue (if they will) on their end with a newer Firmware update.
