Busted - My fault?

So's I have it running fine, then I put it in my bag, and sling it on my back. 5 minutes later when I turn it on the screen jinkety-janks and the thing flashes red on and off. I do a factory reset and it becomes obvious it's the screen. So, uh, is this my fault?

In a sense or bad luck. I've been putting my various readers in a pack or pocket etc. for years with no problem so far, but some treat them like fine china and they get broken anyway.

Hope you aren't too upset.

Looking at those diagonal lines in your image, it may not be your fault but physical screen damage is not covered by the warranty.

So it's probably time to start looking for a new ereader.

Sorry I can't give you any better news.

The problem is that the phrase "sling it on my back" and a thin fragile glass backed display don't go well together. Partly your fault, partly that the screen is not as robust as one might be used to with a cellphone or smaller device. A lot of people have damaged screens on iPads and other larger devices, you're not alone. Best to treat e-readers gingerly until the flexible e-ink screens hit the market.

I was reading another thread about a guy waiting to buy his first Kobo and literally shuddered when I read that he wanted the Glo so he could fit it in his rear pocket as visions of him sitting on it flexed it just enough to ruin the screen.

No need to sit on it. One co-worker had his Mini in the back pocket of his jeans and toasted it when he bent over to replace the toner in a Xerox 5755 printer.

Ah well. Guess I'm in the market again. Has anything better come out recently?

There's the larger Aura, but there are also rumours of an impending new device.

Kobo replaced my Glo that had a cracked screen, I spoke to their helpdesk and explained that I went to sleep after reading and put it on the bedside table, woke up the next day and there was a perfect horizontal crack across the centre. I don't know if it was a manufacturing fault (pressure on the glass for example) or if I leaned on it while getting up to go to the toilet in the night.

Fair play to them they said it wasn't a problem and it would be swapped out. I originally contacted them to ask how much a screen replacement would be as it was only 2-3 days after it launched and wanted to check if the price would be that high I might as well buy a new one.

Send them an email, you might be lucky like I was, or at the least sending it to them to be fixed will be less than buying a new one.

If this rumour is true, Kobo has brought back a textured back for this iteration.

The rule of thumb seems to be if the crack(s) are diagonal it's pilot error, but horizontal(and vertical?) cracks are manufacturing defects? Maybe because of the way the screen is mounted?

Yes, I reckon a single perfect horizontal line is unlikely to be a smashed screen. The ones I've seen have always had some diagonal/irregular component, even if it's difficult to see.

Not always the case. A broken screen can show a perfect image of the last thing displayed. But it is still broken.
