Using Cloud Drive with a PW 3G?

I've been searching the forums here, and I'm still not quite sure this has been answered definitively or not: would the Amazon Cloud Drive web interface work over the Paperwhite's 3G connection for AZW/Mobi files?

The reason I'm asking is that I've been thinking of the PW 3G for travel, as it seems to be a good compromise between the small but unlit Kobo Mini and the higher-res but heavier Aura HD I use for PDF and manga. Plus, I've still got a decently sized collection of Mobi/AZW from Baen. I know I can download most of my Kindle books from the cloud over 3G (save for a few AZW collections which appear to be 2mb in size), but I'm wondering if I can upload my Baen Books to Amazon Cloud Storage and download them as needed when I'm out of country.

Free Wikipedia access is always a plus, but... I'm trying to figure out if I cn justify the cost of the 3G with access to Amazon Cloud Drove as well for those 200-600kb books.

Not the Cloud drive as such - that's something separate. What you can do, though, is send your books to Amazon by email. They will then appear in your Kindle Archive as "personal documents" and you can download them via 3G.

I've got some in Personal Documents already, but haven't tried that over 3g before. I know it works okay on WiFi.. but don't know if it works for travelling. Especially when there are other posts that reported larger books not downloading over the 3g, despite being bought from Amazon.

I'm starting to think it might be safer to lose the e-ink and use the Kindle app on my iPad with tethering. Or bite the bullet and drag the big bulky Aura along with everything on SD.

Actually, since I'm mostly asleep, I'll ask: are Personal Documents considered part of the "Cloud" in the PW home screen? Our do I need to send them again via Send to Kindle, even if they're already archived? I haven't updated my Touch to the recent FW, so don't know.

Downloading personal docs works absolutely fine over 3G. There's a charge for it, of course (15c/MB last time I checked), but it works just fine. Yes, they're a part of the "Cloud" on the Kindle.

Know if it rounds up or down? Outside the U.S. (where free WiFi isn't always a given and the delivery cost is a buck or two, IIRC), I'm going to have to see if that 1.3 MB omnibus is worth the $1 or $2 it'll cost to grab. I've half filed my Touch (which I bought due to it having more storage than the $69 Kindle) as is, and only the thought of being able to pull my collection (a third from Baen and other bookstores) makes the 3g seem appealing.

Oh well - question answered at least.

It doesn't round at all. It simply accumulates the fees and then charges your Amazon account when it reaches (I think) $10. So a 1.3MB book would cost about 20c.

For German users Amazon states:
"Wenn Sie persönliche Dokumente auf Ihren Kindle Keyboard über Whispernet übertragen, beträgt die Gebühr 0,25 EUR per MB. Die Gebühr bezieht sich immer auf die aufgerundete MB-Anzahl und gilt für jedes einzelne Dokument, das über Whispernet an einen Kindle Keyboard gesendet wird."

Which says that it will cost 25 Euro Cent per MB and it will rounded up to MB and for each document. It says Keyboard but I am sure it is the same for PW.

Thanks for the clarification. That's changed since I last investigated the matter. I have a 3G Kindle Touch but haven't used it for a while.

Here's the prices on Amazon.com:

Quote:
Kindle Personal Documents Service Fees

There is a document processing fee for the Kindle Personal Documents Service when you do not use Wi-Fi or USB. Fees for the Kindle Personal Document Service via Whispernet are based on the size of the file submitted, your country, and where you're accessing Whispernet. If possible, we will attempt to deliver via Wi-Fi rather than Whispernet, and no document processing fee will be charged.
Note: Kindle Personal Documents Service doesn't charge fees for delivery of personal documents to Kindle devices over Wi-Fi or to Kindle reading apps.

--Kindle device users living in the United States: Kindle Personal Documents Service fee via Whispernet is $.15 per megabyte domestic and $.99 per megabyte international.
--Kindle device users living outside the United States: Kindle Personal Documents Service fee via Whispernet is $.99 per megabyte.
--Aggregation of fees for Kindle Personal Documents Service: If you send multiple documents for conversion, consecutive orders that cost less than $5.00 may be combined into one transaction and appear as a single charge.

I'm in Canada, so it'll cost $0.99/mb, as noted by Shari and Helgetus. And it looks like that 1.3 mb book would be treated as a 2mb book...

Also, as a test, I paraded my Touch Wifi to 5.3. I see the Cloud option, but that one shows my purchases from Amazon, and none of my uploaded Baen books from the Personal Documents list. Damn.

It should definitely show personal docs. Perhaps you're looking in the wrong place?

I hit "Cloud" and it only shows purchases not on the Kindle. I hit the Menu button in the upper right, and it only shows the usual things. There are also PDF files I didn't resend to my Kindle after the last reset in PD, and they're not showing.

Have you got the "My Items" drop-down set to "All Items"?

Nope. I did check that too. Touch limitation, or wifi limitation? Doubt the latter and the former, given you've got the 3G version of the Touch.
