Cover Images into Source Files

Once one has downloaded metadata and covers, it would be great to be able to replace the covers in a particular format (usually ePub). i.e. I have an ePub file that has the wrong cover in it. I would like to easily replace the cover in the ePub file with the one I have downloaded.

I would like to do this without doing an ePub to ePub conversion. Is this possible?

Polish Books is what you're after - select book(s) press 'p' - it does epubs and azw3's

Yes.

There are currently two options for this:
  • Use the Modify ePub plugin. This has been an option for a while, and also supports other standard things you might want to do without a conversion.
  • Use the newer 'Polish' option in core Calibre. You may have to configure the Calibre toolbar to add it. This can handle a few formats in addition to ePub but has less functionality than the modify ePub plugin.

One thing to keep in mind is that, strictly speaking, cover images and ISBNs are linked. So you may want to try and match these if any later editing might occur so you can avoid confusing results. For instance, due to the use of the metadata download function, or when researching into the book and you cannot find an exact match.

It's your database, you can do whatever best suits your personal needs. I'm just trying to make you aware that this could cause problems later on. Particularly when, several months from now, you don't remember changing things.

Many thanks indeed to all for taking the time to respond. All working exactly as I wanted it to — with Polish Books now on my toolbar.
