Is Kobo filtering non NA IPs?

Since about a week ago, when I access Kobo's website, I can no longer see Aura HD listed under the e-readers section at http://www.kobo.com/ereaders (I can, however, access http://www.kobo.com/koboaurahd directly via the address bar of my browser).

There is no way I can access the buy page for Aura HD at http://www.kobo.com/kobo-aurahd.html though, irregardless of the OS and browser used or whether the cache of it has been cleared. Any attempt to access the buy page will lead me to http://www.kobobooks.com/error.aspx?errortype=404

As I am not from the North American region, I have also tried accessing Kobo via a US proxy (not sure if this act masks my IP), to the same result.

I have already contacted Kobo Tech support, they insist their website is working just fine in the first reply and I am still waiting for their subsequent follow-up.

In the meantime, I am curious what folks from NA and other regions are seeing when they access the above mentioned websites, I believe it will clear the air once we have an idea.

I'm in New Zealand and I can see the Aura at the top of the http://www.kobo.com/ereaders page. Clicking on it takes me to http://www.kobo.com/koboaurahd. There's no "buy" button on that page, just a "Where to buy" link that goes to http://www.kobo.com/koboaurahd/wheretobuy/ and that lists a bunch of websites.

I have asked a friend who is currently in Australia whether she can access Aura HD's buy page at http://www.kobo.com/kobo-aurahd.html

She can't too.

I don't know if it's just IP filtering - I can't get to that page when I'm VPNed in to Canada or the US, either.

I'm in the US and I see the Aura on both sites. The Buy link is also there.

Have any of you reached out to Kobo via the official support lines to try to learn what is going on?

Yup, Kobo just replied me, again

Their reply in whole as below:

Quote:
Hello Kobo Customer

Thank you for contacting Tier 2 Kobo Direct Orders.

Could you please advise from where you are attempting to purchase the device.

From your Kobo account I see the country selected is Singapore.

I am afraid it is not available fro purchase online or in a store in Singapore.

The only option which I can recommend is that if you have a friend or family member in the U.S.A or Canada get them to place the order and the for them to forward it on to you.

I hope this helps and I do apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Sincerely

The Kobo Team
Up till about a week back I could still access the buy page (from Singapore) freely, then suddenly it was being redirected to an error page and became somewhat a permanent fixture thence, thus I was curious as to what happened, was it a technical glitch or a policy change on Kobo's side?

With Kobo's reply and the fact that jersysman who is in States can access the buy page, I guess the answer is the latter.

Maybe those who are more internet tech savvy can shed some light as to why VPN and proxy servers proved to be futile too.

On a side note, for purchase of ereader (specifically the Aura HD) from Kobo.com, is there any shipping fee if buyer opts for the slowest method?

Also, on the part of sales tax, how does Kobo go about levying? Is it a flat rate (of ?%) or State dependent, e.g. about 7% for Ohio and 0% (tax free) for Oregon etc?

Appreciate if US folks can shed some light as I may need to engage external help to procure a unit, thus need to have a better grasp on the costs involved

Shipping was free to California. Tax was 7.5% (California base) which is lower than what it is for our county (8.75%).

Hi there, I live in Thailand and ordered the Aura about 3 weeks ago. Back then those pages you asked about were still working fine, now I'm also getting the same 404 error. Anyway I had it shipped to a US package forwarder called shipito.com and from there with FedEx to Bangkok. Shipito can also assist you with the purchase but it gets really expensive once you add up all these fees and shipping costs. Probably best to find a way to place the order yourself and just use them to get it to Singapore.

I also had to pay the sales tax for shipping the item to a CA address (it's charged at purchase time). For some reason Kobo didn't accept the OR address of the package forwarder.

How's the haze situation btw? Hopefully it'll clear soon. Cheers.
