I saw this on my facebook today and thought of GRRM. Just how obsessive do you get over your favourite author ?

I'm one of those weirdos who has no favorites. No favorite movie. No favorite novel. No favorite movie. No favorite actor. No favorite author. No favorite hooker.

As for the monkey, he always looked shifty-eyed to me. But as long as he keeps in mind that I'm armed and cranky, everything should be jake.

To be perfectly honest, I have very little interest in my "favorite authors" as individuals. I wish them well and hope no harm comes to them like I do any other human, but I have no real desire to "know" them or to interact with them outside the fiction they choose to share with me. They're just people doing what they do.

My desire to chain GRMM to a desk and make him write has nothing to do with being a fan girl. But I would also have to get a decent editor to look over his stuff and use the sledgehammer when he makes some annoyng comment about needing an editor because his stuff is so good.

This! To avoid falling in trap of "my money should not go in to support his/her ideology/activity", I blissfully ignore personal life of authors.

I agree, although I do tend to follow whether or not my favorite authors are likely (or unlikely as the case may be) to finish long series due to health or other reasons. That's about the only thing I bother learning about the authors themselves.

I solved that problem by refusing to start a serial series that's unfinished. I've found that by waiting a few years, there's new "final volume of"s being published all the time.

Same. Though I wonder 1)if I'll ever get to read the A Song of Ice and Fire series and 2)how much of the story I'll know by the time I can. It seems to me like more and more people are relaxed about spoilers once 24 hours have passed from the book/movie/tv show's release.
