Post "The Situation" by Jeff VanderMeer - free download

Wired: "If you aren’t familiar with the work of award-winning writer Jeff VanderMeer, now is your chance to see what the fuss is about. GeekDad is happy to be able to offer Wired readers a PDF copy of VanderMeer’s upcoming book The Situation, courtesy of PS Publishing (cover artwork by Scott Eagle). "

It's in pdf but what the hey...it's free.

I just finished reading The Situation today - it's a terrific example of VanderMeer's wonderfully strange writing. I also highly recommend The City of Saints and Madmen and Veniss Underground, both of which are available through BooksOnBoard (although Veniss Underground can be found cheaper at Diesel-books). VanderMeer has some excellent short stories fiction available online at infinity plus http://www.infinityplus.co.uk/stories/index.htm (a great source for online speculative fiction generally).

He also frequently puts excerpts and fiction on-line at his website/blog: http://www.jeffvandermeer.com/tags/read/fiction/

PDF is hardly a problem when you own acrobat, just copy the text to any DTP app and convert to any format for any reader

i'm keen to read VanderMeer’s book.

I am finding it difficult to copy the text on this PDF. It seems to be copy protected against doing that. And Libprs500 does not want to extract the contents either.

Bummer. I would love to read it, but I am not much of a computer screen reader. And PDF on the Sony PRS-505 is far too slow in response to be much of an alternative.

I was able to extract the text using Mobipocket Creator - granted I had to clean the resulting html file fairly heavily, but I was able to make a nice mobipocket ebook out of it.

@ Donnageddon, seems i got that wrong it is indeed protected against copying, even to make it more readable.

Good thing the baak has enormous margins, a little zooming in and it is readable on my iliad, maybe even on a sony.

Is "baak" the pet name for your iliad?

The program A-PDF Restrictions Remover has been mentioned before on this forum so I guess it's okay to mention it again. It works on this pdf.

RCR, I used the A-PDF program, and it worked well in disabling the Restrictions. Thanks again.

After un-restricting it, Libprs500 still had some difficulty in producing a readable copy, but I just made a txt copy and then with a bit of clean up, Libprs500 made a readable copy.

I guess Jeff VanderMeer will finally get a chance to impress a reader, despite the restrictive clog that his publisher embedded in the, admittedly free, short story.

IMO, advertisements, as this short story is, should not be made so difficult for the consumer to.. er.. consume.
