issues with email from Calibre to Amazon

I'm having an issue trying to send an email from Calibre to my Kindle.com account. The tricky bit is it worked before, but I hadn't sent anything for the last few months and now there is a problem. I've tried using both my home email and gmail account, but neither work. I have both of these emails set to accept on my Amazon account. The error message that I get with the gmail account when I use the test setting is:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\wizard\send_email.py", line 173, in test_email_settings
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtp.py", line 113, in sendmail
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtplib.py", line 610, in login
SMTPAuthenticationError: (535, '5.7.8 Username and Password not accepted. Learn more at\n5.7.8 http://support.google.com/mail/bin/a...r=14257\n5.7.8 {BADCREDENTIALS} lq4sm25274107pab.19 - gsmtp')

Any suggestions?

I'm sorry, I have no knowledge of this issue but you'll have better luck if it were in the Calibre sub-forum.

The error message is that your authentication credentials are wrong. Either the username or password or both so check them.

Thanks for the reply. I've double checked and re-entered a few times both at the Amazon site and the Calibre site. Still no go.

Gmail had often problems in working with calibre (they try to block automated e-mails of all kind). Use any other e-mail account and it should work fine.

It could be the format of your password. You could try changing it. This is something to ask in the Calibre forum though. You will find better help there.

I don't even use this feature anymore. Gmail can be so picky these days. I use Send to Kindle. It's just so much quicker and bypasses email altogether.

Thanks Vroo and Blossom,
I have tried adding a new email account using Outlook.com, but that didn't work either. This was the reply to that test:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages\calibre\gui2\wizard\send_email.py", line 173, in test_email_settings
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtp.py", line 116, in sendmail
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtplib.py", line 733, in sendmail
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtplib.py", line 456, in rset
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtplib.py", line 381, in docmd
File "site-packages\calibre\utils\smtplib.py", line 358, in getreply
SMTPServerDisconnected: Connection unexpectedly closed

I get a similar error message back when I tried to use my own ISP email address. I've also tried changing passwords, removing and re-installing Calibre, rebooting the system, and using a System Restore. Not sure what is left to try.

Are you using the correct smtp port? All ISPs block certain ports due to spamming. You really need to post in Calibre's forum. Kovid and his team will know what those errors mean. We here have no clue.

Hi Blossom,
I just posted the question in the Calibre forum. Hopefully I can get some idea there. I also downloaded the Send to Kindle application, but I thought that was just for url's. How can I use this feature to send downloaded files to my Kindle?

Now that's a question I can answer.

Make sure you download the one under From your Desktop on that page.

On your PC, you just open Windows Explorer find the mobi you want to send and right click on it then choose Send To Kindle. It will upload the book straight to your Personal Documents cloud.

Re-entered what at the Amazon site and Calibre site? Those sites should have nothing to do with your email credentials.

Did you follow the instructions at the link provided in the error message?
https://support.google.com/mail/answer/14257

You need to tell GMail that the automated process attempting to access your account really is you. Once you follow the steps in that link, Calibre should be be able to send through the gmail account without issue.

I've run into this before with website auto-mailers.

You have to set up Amazon to receive from specific email addresses. I tried re-setting those and also changing the passwords to see if that was the issue. A few on this site have suggested that gmail is finicky so I tried using other email servers including my own ISP. I tried making the changes suggested on the link above and that still didn't work. I have since downloaded a "Send to Kindle" app that works. I appreciate your suggestions but I think this is something at the Calibre end since it doesn't seem to work with any server.
