kindle touch back function HELP!

I've had a kindle touch for the past year or so. The back touch function used to work really well. If I mistakenly ended up on another chapter of the book, I could simply use the back button to get back to the page I was on. But now whenever I use the back button, it goes back to the index..not the previous page/place. Is this because I have too many books or something? I have around 119 items on my index. Is there anything I can do to get the back button to work like before? Please help.

Is this true for any book you try, or just one book? because if just the one book, you may have a corrupted book file some how.

A standard thing to try is a hard reset. (hold the power switch for 30 sec.)

Yes, I've tried it with quite a few books and it's the same with all of them. I even tried it with some books that I read a while ago when the back function was working properly but no, it just goes back to the index.

Tried that. Also tried two different firmware updates. The original on my kindle touch was 5.0.0. But the updates didn't change anything neither did resetting it. I'm quite flabbergasted because I didn't change anything in the device..didn't hack it or anything.

Then you may want to re-install the firmware using Kubrick

Are you sure that you have a browsing history to go "back" to? "Back" only does anything following a jump via a hyperlink (or search, etc). If you simply open a book from the Home screen, and read it, then no matter how many pages you've gone through, select "Back" will take you to the Home screen, since that was the most recent jump.

Ah, this sounds plausible. I don't know the technicalities. What I do know is that sometimes when I'm reading a book, I accidentally touch something and the devices skips many, many pages/chapters. I'm a little ashamed to say that I still don't know what exactly I did to cause this to happen. But when it did happen, touching the back button would take me back to the page I was reading. However recently, I can't seem to go back to my last page when I accidentally skip chapters or whatever. Does the hyperlink theory make sense here? Also, I've never connected the device to wifi or anything so that is out of question.

Yes - "Back" only undoes jumps, so it only remembers where you were if you go to a footnote, select a different chapter from the table of contents, do a search, open a book from the home screen, or something like that.

Try doing a search, selecting a search result, and then doing "Back". That should take you back to your reading position at the time you did the search.

I'll try that. Just a little apprehensive because I just updated the firmware to version 5.3.2.1 and I quite like it. Also everything else works perfectly. Will try it as a last resort

I'd try a Factory Reset before I'd mess with the firmware.

No, I think I misunderstood the back function for a bit. It works after a big jump like when I skip chapters or something at least for now so I'm going to try and work with it. Thanks everyone for your help

If you just turned too many pages at once, that doesn't count as a jump. Only if you jumped to the next chapter or followed a link or something.
