Line breaking before superscript

How do you prevent a line break before a superscript?

I've noticed that

text with a footnote.1

sometimes breaks before the if there is no more room, which results in an awkward superscript by itself on the next line.

Typically, you don't. That's the renderer doing a sloppy job and you should report it as a bug instead.

But if you really want to work around this, I guess the proper form would be to add a "word joiner" character in between (U+2060, & #8288; without the space between & and #). However, depending on the font and renderer you may see a square or a question mark instead...

For what it is worth, it does not have a problem in the Sony Reader Library.

Why do you put the dot between "footnote" and ?

Try "text with a footnote 1."

The "dot" is a period at the end of a sentence. Footnote numbers are placed after the period.

That depends on the language and typographical style choices (and context).
