Get books into Calibre and preserve the date

I used to sort my books by date. When I got a new computer, I added the books to Calibre, and it replaced the date with the current date. I found a backup, that has all the original dates. How do I move these into Calibre and keep the original date. I tried a couple ways, and I got May 1.

Thanks, Kovid. I restored them per your directions, and everything is great. I just have to copy the books I added to Calibre since Feb 6, which is nothing, since my library went back to 2008. I had programed it so the books I read were a different color - it is so calming to see that again! Thanks, and K is coming your way. Debra
