Plugins for Calibre are not to be unzipped. Import them as is.

Hm. It says to find a specific file in the zip. If I don't unzip, how can I find it? I installed Calibre -- which told me to come here for help, theducks. -- then I believe it said to unzip but I could be assuming that. Will check their steps tomorrow and not unzip. Will post my results. Thank you,

If you are installing the "Tools" then they do need to be unzipped to some temporarily location. But the zipped plugins contained therein are not to be unzipped prior to adding.

As theducks indicated specific instructions regarding the "Tools" is not permitted on Mobileread. If you need more specific guidance ask on the site where you acquired the plugins.

I have the instructions.

1. Download/install Kindle reader.

2..D/l install and run Calibre. Download the plugins. In Calibre click Preferences. Under Advanced click Plugins.

3. Click Load Plugin from file, then navigate to where you unzipped the Calibre plugins. Choose xxxxxxxx.zip and click Open.

It says you unzip ... so you see my issue? When I try to unzip, it gives errors on every file.

I redid it and they opened. So all is good, right?

Nope. It says to go to Windows Explorer. When I search for that and click on it, it brings up Libraries.

So I go into Kindle reader and it says local content is in users/me/documents/Kindle Content. I try computer/users/me/MyDocuments but it is empty. But the Kindle Reader program has 1,300 titles...

I'm supposed to find Kindle Content type files and drag them to Calibre window.

Files should now be unlocked (backing up Kindle content to my laptop).

So I'm close but not there yet. Calibre "help" you can always ask for help, in the very active calibre forum at mobileread.com, or on the Facebook calibre fan page, or at #calibreforum on Twitter. I don't twit, Facebook seems to be for fans, and I'm here. Nothing to do with Tools. I got the plugin at Calibre yet they seem to not offer help other than telling you to go elsewhere.

BTW, I got this info in PCWorld Mag, May 2013 issue.

So from http://www.pcworld.com/article/20286...nt-format.html

What you should realize is that PC World is missing a key bit of info. While MobileRead is where support for calibre is found, and is full of many people who are very passionate and willing to help out, the extra zip they have you download is from a third party "Apprentice Alf" and is used to remove DRM (copy protection) from books. Unfortunately, for legal reasons NO discussion of the DRM removal tools is allowed here. Search for "Apprentice Alf" in Google and ask for help there.

The only files I downloaded were Calibre from Calibre and the plugins. I think I missed something. I only want to copy them to my PC. Not for sale or trade but for me in case I crash. All my content is from Amazon. I don't use pirated materials. Amazon offers enough content -- all ratings - to keep me happy.

I am having trouble with Calibre, not removing anything illegally.

Unless ... The plugin is what you refer to as being illegal?

Correct. The zip file that PC World suggests you too download is from Apprentice Alf, and is what is used to remove DRM from (or Unlock) the Kindle books.

Ok, thanks. I don't need to remove DRM so long as I can backup to use on the same Kindle 2, I'm all set.

This has been interesting. As someone who has gone to court to prosecute over copyright infringement/theft, I don't want tools to remove DRM on my machines. I thought we bought the books to read on our Kindles. Apparently we pay to read them on the Kindle but don't own the books. Amazon was very smart/wise in how they set this up.
