Books show in Carousel but not shelf

I have a Kindle Fire HD 7". I had about a dozen books I had created using Calibre, which I sideloaded manually (by copying them, not using Calibre). All of them show up in the Carousel. However, four of them are missing from the bookshelf view. Any ideas how or why this could have happened?

They could be in "docs" instead of "books"

Happens to me sometimes too. A couple of mine have ended in the docs folder.

SampleAndy: I think that worked, but it may have destroyed the table of contents.

But I don't know if I was looking at the right version of the book. I was experimenting with different ways of getting the TOC to work, and I may have used a copy of the book where the TOC was already messed up.

I'm going to do some more testing and let you know.
