New Calibre Install

Got a new computer, and of course the first thing I did was install Calibre. I unchecked download ratings, and restarted. But it is still downloading ratings when downloading metadata, even thought the box is no longer checked. Is there a second box?

This is a new issue. I prefer to send all my books to my kindle via Wi-Fi. Recently, one stopped because it exceeded size limitations for Google. It was 31 MB (encyclopedia for home brewing). Does Calibre have a compressing function that would get this down substantially?

Not sure but I know recently I had found some cookbooks that were positively GIGANTIC. Expoding them in calibre it was all because of the colour images, many of which were 2 Meg jpegs. I lowered the resolution of all of them and it made quite a difference in size.
