Automatically send news to column
I've got my calibre set up so that I'm automatically fetching a couple of different news sources. In order to keep my Kobo relatively well organised I've setup a few shelves as a user-defined column, including news. Can I get Calibre to automatically add any news it's fetching to the news column in the calibre library so that when it sends news via email to the Kobo, it goes straight to the news shelf?

I don't use the news fetching myself, but from a brief look, you can set tags to be applied, but not values for custom columns. To use that, you would need to use the tags column as a shelf column on the driver configuration.

I can think of two other ways that might work, but I haven't played with them.

The Reading List plugin has an option to build a list from a search. If you have a list that does a search on the tags column for "News", that could create the appropriate list. The reading list also has an option to set a custom series column. If you set this to "News" and added the column as a shelf column, it should work.

The other possibility is to create a custom column built from other columns. You should be able to use a template to return a shelf name based on the "News" tag or the extra tag used in the configuration of the news download. But, I can't help with the template to do this.

If by the news shelf, you mean Kobo's preconfigured "New's and Magazines" link on the Library drop down, unless there is some massive recoding done of the Kobo device driver interface, the answer is no.

When Kobo scans content and adds it to the database, they have certain attributes, one I think is a value 6 which means books.

Newspapers on the other hand are type 9.

I know davidfor has done some experimentation here, so hopefully he can expand on this.

Newspapers are actually type 10. Is that enough of an expansion?

As Peter said, adding them to the "News and Magazines" is not something I can do. I had a look at it a while ago and it would mean creating a set of records in the database for the news. At the least, there is a record fore each newspaper and each article in the paper. But, I don't know exactly what should be created and with what details. And I am not completely sure of the format of the newspapers. They are probably just epubs or kepubs, but I am not completely sure.

The suggestions above should be able to get the news epubs into a "normal" shelf on the device.
