Can't download book
So this was a first for me.
Yesterday, while browsing the Kindle Store from my Note 10.1 using K4And I came upon The Making of Modern Japan by Marius B. Jansen, it happens to be a book I already own the dead tree version of, but it is also a tome that I like to check things in so when I saw it was available as an e-book I immediately purchased it and got it delivered to my Note 10.1. Happy as a clam. Then, this morning when opening my K3, I went into my archived items to download it to the device. Now I get an error message Unavailable for download The item is not compatible with this device. What goes? Shouldn't Amazon clarify that before I make a purchasing decision? |

They do tell you. Look at the book description: underneath it it says "Available only on these devices", with a dropdown that expands to show only tablets and reading apps.

Maybe on the full web page, not on the Kindle app page (I think).

Ah, OK. They probably think that if you buy from the app, you want to read from the app. But if you use "the tools" you'll be able to transfer it to your K3. Presumably it's a book with lots of colour pictures that the publisher thinks wouldn't look good on an eInk screen?

I see. Well, I will see what the tools can accomplish. The printed version did have pictures but they were all in B&W so I somehow doubt they would upgrade to colour, but you could be right. I was just so baffled since I've never encountered this problem before. Somehow it goes against the grain for everything I believed in when it comes to the Kindle and Amazon.

It's certainly not common, but I have come across a couple of other books which have device restrictions. I bought a book not so long ago on digital photography which was similar; in its case the reason was that it had lots of links to tutorial videos on the author's web site.
A reason to stick to buying books via the web site, perhaps! |

That's correct, they aren't. But the "Kindle for PC" app works fine on Windows 8, and puts its books in the usual place. You can have both "Kindle for PC" and the Metro Windows 8 App installed simultaneously if you wish to.

The only Kindle device this Kindle book works on is the Paperwhite. What, no Fire?

Harry!
Thanks for all the advice. In the end it didn't do anything. It is in Topaz format and that is not supported according to Calibre. |

Drat. Sorry to hear that. Probably best to request a refund if you bought it to read on your K3.

I can read it on my Android device so I'm not that miserable. It is the first Topaz book I've encountered and I just think it would be prudent of Amazon to make that clear on the product page.

I agree. I went to the website and it says Kindle Edition in big print. The "Available only on these devices" is in small print and buried a bit. I certainly missed it and it never would have occurred to me that a Kindle book couldn't be read on a Kindle. Go figure.

Just to clarify, being a Topaz book isn't the reason that it can't be read on the K3; I have a number of Topaz books which work just fine on older Kindles. For reasons best known to themselves, the publisher of this particular book has specifically restricted it to the devices listed.
