Usbnetwork and usb ports
Good afternoon,
First of all, thank you for all the work which is done here. It's very nice even if I'm a simple user. I'm not sure this is the right place to post, as I'm not a developer, far from it! Sorry about the possible mistake but it has a link with the contents of this part of the forum. I installed usbnetwork on my Kindle Touch. So far I haven't really figure out how to use it to ssh or other things but playing with things that I don't fully understand is fun. Anyway, right now among other things, after plugging my Kindle (I think on usbnetwork mode), to upload a book on the Kindle, my usb mouse didn't not work anymore. The usb ports are not seen any more and I got an error at the connection saying "can't enumerate port so and so". There is a more detailed description of the problem at the address there, but in FRENCH! http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=1201241 The problem exists under Ubuntu, openSUSE and Windows. So it's a hardware problem, which prevents the usb system of the computer to work properly. The problem with the mouse is minor, as I'm using a laptop, with a touchpad. The real headache is there are also, I think, interferences with the boot process. Does someone already meet that kind of problem ? Thank you in advance, Jeanphi Last edited by Jeanphi; 03-09-2013 at 08:08 AM. |

That does not sound like anything posted here before.
What other things have you done recently? Like, in, what other things that you don't know about have you played with? |

Sounds like a hardware problem of the computer. I'm 99% sure that it has absolutely nothing to do with the Kindle.

Thank you for the answers.
This is definitively a hardware issue, as I do have the same problem with the three OS (Ubuntu, openSUSE and Windows). And it has something to do with the usb system of the computer. Is this problem linked to the Kindle? I really don't know. But this hardware issue appeared just after I plugged the Kindle Touch where I installed usbnetwork (and not when I plugged the K3 Kindle without usbnetworking). And it happened twice. Looking at the words "usb ports" and "usbnetwork", I made the assumption that some links could be existing explaining the problem. Right now I can't use the mouse using a usb port or a IR mouse. But, what is more worrysome is that the computer also refuses to boot, stopping at the very beginning with a line about usb controller or something like that. It does not accept to boot on a live CD (and the setting of the BIOS is right). After many attempts, being blocked on the "ASUS screen" and shutting down the computer with the power button, I was able to boot using a external HD on a usb port. The external HD didn't have a OS, but the fact to plug it on the usb port unblocks the usb problem and allowed the booting after some time. The mouse is still not seen but at least, I can use the computer. And I think to remember that the first time I had that problem, I used the same trick, but with a Kindle instead of the external HD. Last time, the problem disappeared by itself after a few days and I was able to use the mouse, till I upload a book on the Kindle. So I guess, I will wait those few days, hoping for the same resolution. Thank you for reading that, and I know that HW problem is not what you are looking at right now By the way, Ixtab, I'm very grateful for what you are offering us here. Jeanphi |

Just in case someone meets a similar problem:
Turning off the power of the computer, as mentioned in French in the post number 5 of the following link, gave me again access to the mouse and an easy reboot of the computer. https://www.alionet.org/showthread.p...ight=enumerate I will check if this silly solution works again next time I download a book from Caliber on my Kindle. Thanks again, Jeanphi Last edited by Jeanphi; 03-10-2013 at 09:12 AM. |

Check with your PC's motherboard manufacturer for an updated BIOS, install that. |

That would be one thing, while it still might be not fixable at all. Enumeration is the first act of USB communication after connecting a new device. If that is failing, it's most likely hardware, as was stated here. In about half of the cases I've witnessed, it was due to a faulty cable. But then, there are horribly borked USB setups out there, especially when it comes to power management. USB ports are typically also not really prepared for electromagnetic shocks / static discharges, which can unfortunately occur when plugging in devices, especially so for devices that have their own powering. For doubtful USB devices, I'll often use a USB hub just to have a weak link in the chain for which I can get a (cheap) replacement.

Thank you for the comments and the explanations. This is much clearer and I agree the problem must come from my laptop, even if the triggering event is the plugging of one particular Kindle.
The remarks about the "BIOS device enumeration" and the power management help me to understand a little bit more the context of the problem, and why unplugging the power cord from the computer make the usb ports work again and allows access to the mouse. Jeanphi |
