Offline Mode (without actual book files accessible)

I use calibre a lot, but was wondering if there was a way to see my book database without having access to the actual books. I use a portable hard drive with all the books, can I just hold the database on my flash drive and the books on the portable hard drive or will this damage the files or database. I just always have the flash drive, but not the portable one, and this would let me edit stuff on the go.

I do this on Media monkey and it's great, bc it updates the files when I plug the portable file in.

Also, i have 6 libraries I"m working on and trying to consolidate, if I can use the database without the portable drive, and I consolidate two databases, will thefiles be moved after when I plug in the hard drive again?

No if you modify your database the book locations are simultaneously modified, so you must have both available at once.

Thanks, that would be an awesome option if it's ever possible.
