Sigil allows &emsp; and &ensp;

I have a report that ADE on Mac is objecting to these, showing ? for an unknown character. They are being used within a simple Table which otherwise displays correctly.

ADE on my PC displays them correctly, as does Aldiko on a Nexus 7, and both Kindle Previewer and an actual Kindle.

Any thoughts?

Try it with ADE 1.7 and see what it does there. Some characters will not always work.

It also depends on the font being used.

I had specified no font beyond 'serif'.

Which means that the actual font used can be anything, and different in every app/device.

The only way to guarantee a given font is embedding it, and only if the reader supports embedded fonts.

Also keep in mind that while you report success with "both Kindle Previewer and an actual Kindle," emsp and ensp are certainly not sanctioned according to the Kindle Publishing Guidelines.

Do NOT use Unicode format characters, as they may cause problems.

Proper Display is only one aspect.

The next line implies that even if displayed, other things can get broken.
