Poll: Are you waiting?

Are you waiting for OS6 to upgrade your pda or buy a new one?

I'm just curious to see what others are doing and how Palm is affecting (or not) people's decision-making.

I realize the compulsion for people to give detailed descriptions of their thinking, but please take time to also answer the polling question above for statistical purposes.

(yea, I'm a geek)

Thanks

I recently goes back to the NX80 from a Tungsten T3... I really like the swivel-digital camera and the non-sliding tablet design. I do not use Wifi a lot that's why I opted for this over the NX80... This is my second NX80, since my last one broke when I dropped it. I doubt PalmOne design will top Sony's in terms of tech wizardry... but I was hoping that they would since Sony will no longer produce Palm OS PDAs.

As for OS6 devices, as with most new devices, I would probably get one, test drive it and then sold it off (at a slight loss) if it did not top the NX80.

I'm waiting too... and quite frankly, impatiently. I've been thinking about buying at T|T3 with the notion that it will presumably be upgradeable, and if it's not, then I'd just sell it.

I'd hate to upgrade and move proggies and then have to start all over again. So I'm waiting to see, but suspect that new OS6 units will be in excess of ...well, my budget. I don't want to guess a number.

My suspicion is that I'll either: a.) become so frustrated at my current Clie and impulsively buy a T3, or b.) wait it out and buy a T3 anyway.

I'm in that same place. It's frustrating. I would go out an buy a T|E right now but that's no solution either. I'd be miserable when then next decent Palm devices come out and I can't justify buying one.

I might do it if it wasn't for the learning curve (like getting everything set up, determining what software still works, and what needs to be upgraded or replaced) plus the accessories cost (storage card, extra styluses, screen protector, cables, keyboard, etc.) and the cost of all the software purchases and upgrades...

And what money is left for my dream OS6 PDA if I do all that? (I'm not very good at selling things, so I usually end up giving them to someone or keeping extras that I don't use much.)

If OS6 will make me upgrade everything, I might as well consider switching over to PocketPC, one of the newer VGA models.

Alex: You sound like Sony.

I'm also stalled on the T3 because of the lack of wifi and battery life. I might start looking more closely at PPC's too (high-end X30 to be exact). I just hate giving my money to anything M$ related.

My Clie is so seriously overloaded right now and I want a new toy. Like BobR, I'll probably just wind up giving my earlier unit away, which is probably pretty silly...but, so am I.

Several big features actually.
  • Even more support for ARM-native apps
  • Support for running multiple applications
  • Dynamic heap memory for each app
  • Built-in APIs for roaming on wireless nets
  • I/O interfacing
  • Native support for M$ Exchange and Lotus Notes
  • Increased graphics support for both landscape and portrait

I'm sure I'm forgetting something huge. Anyone?

My ipaq is off being repaired under warranty (static zap killed it ) so I'm back on my Clie for the duration. It's only OS4.1, but by god I miss my PPC! I know later palms are faster and OS5 is better than OS4, but I really, _really_ miss the speed and multi-tasking of my admittedly low-end 1930. There are so many things the PPC can do that the Clie can't.... Please get well and come home soon... <sniff>

Back on topic, unless OS6 has true multitasking, there's no way I'd even look sideways at it.

Craig.

Ain't gonna wait

So far, no one has voted as "undecided"... except me.
Alright... well, I just decided not to wait (can I get my vote back?). I'll get a T|T3 and see if it can be upgraded. If that's not possible, no big deal. Also, the first OS6 models will be out of my budget, anyway.
I was torn between the T3 and the TH55. Now, I believe that even if the T3 is not upgradeable, its future is brighter than the TH55's: since Sony is dropping the market, sooner or later I'll have to give my memory sticks away and move to PalmOne (for some reason, I'm not interested in PPCs).

When Sony announced they would stop selling the Clie line in the US I decided that keeping an abandoned device, a NX70V, as my primary PDA would not serve my handheld computing needs. I knew OS6 was a ways off. The T|3 and Zodiac 2 became my (very) short list of candidates for an immediate upgrade to my otherwise 2-3 year cycle.

The gamer in me had me leaning towards the Zodiac. The timing of the retail lauch was a blessing. I was hesitant to buy the Zodiac sight unseen without first having the opportunity to test drive one. Despite the limited capabilities of the demo units at CompUSA, I knew immediately that the Zodiac would be my next device and I bought one soon thereafter.

When Tapwave comes out with an OS6 Zodiac sometime in Q3 or Q4 of next year according to the latest statements by Tapwave, I'll decide whether or not OS6 is worth an immediate upgrade. As it stands, the Zodiac provides multimedia capabilities equal to or greater than the OS5 Clies without the proprietary APIs and Memory Stick media. Several popular applications support the Zodiac's screen (portrait and landscape 320X480 & 480X320) analog controller, stereo sound and rumble effects with more released almost daily.

I don't think the differences between what my Zodiac can do now with OS 5.2T and OS 6 will be worth it at first considering the amount of time it will take for OS 6 applications and support to become readily available.
