MBP SMC reset

Hi,

Did anyone here ever had to reset their Mac's SMC?

I updated my Mountain Lion yesterday and my Macbook Pro has been crazy even since. Fans always at 6000rpm, keyboard backlight doesn't work, the OS doesn't recognize battery even though it says right under it that the battery is the curent power source.

A quick Googling pointed me to the SMC - System Management Controller - as being the problem. To reset it, one needs to hold SHIFT + CTRL + OPTION + power button and release them all the the same time. In lther words I followed exactly the steps in the Apple documentation : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964

However the problem persists. Something that I noticed is that there was no light at all on the power cable. Could it be related? As in, a defect power adaptor having caused the problem during the OS update? I used another cable and it worked fine (the light was green) though it didn't help when trying to reset the SMC again.

Basically I'm looking for any clue that could help me. I really need to fix this. At 6000rpm the fans are extremely loud and it must not be good for them to spin at such a high speed interminentely.

Thanks.
