Calibre suddenly unable to communicate with device

I have Windows 8 and the latest version of Calibre. I use a Nexus 7 and a Galaxy Ace to read.
It's all been working beautifully, without a problem. Now, suddenly, I'm getting the "Unable to Communicate with Device" error with both the Nexus 7 and the Galaxy Ace.
I've rebooted, downgraded to an earlier version of Calibre, checked my settings, and to no avail. Here's the error message:

ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

Failed to create folder: hr=2147500037 facility=0 error_code=16389 description: Unspecified error

Have no clue what's going wrong. Help!

I got it to work by keeping the version at 0.9..17 and restarting my computer and my device. neither worked on the first restart, but did on the second one (that goes for both of them).
Still not sure what happened or that it won't happen again!

That is an error communicating with the device, the only known cure for it is restarting.

Thanks for your reply and confirming that I was doing the right thing! I've since received the 4.2.2 update to my tablet, re-rooted it and it's still working well with Calibre.
I found that I had to restart both the tablet and the computer, and then it worked again!

My experience (on XP) is that many USB errors shut down the port. Cold-starting everything is the only recovery.
