Apart from Amazon and Apple, what options do we, in the UK, have for magazines on an android/google OS; and is a 7 incher really suitable?

Whether or not it's suitable depends what type of magazine it is. If it's one containing primarily stories, then yes, it should be fine. If it has a more complex layout - columns, pictures, etc - then a larger screen is highly desirable.

A far as where you can purchase magazines, Apple, Amazon and Nook all sell magazines that are tied to their hardware and/or reading apps, and Zinio sell magazines that can be read on the PC and on apps for all non-eInk devices.

Yes - Zinio magazines are essentially digital duplicates of a printed magazine, with the same layout, etc, whereas the magazines that Amazon sell are much more like ebooks (in fact they are ebooks).

A good source for ebook magazines is Calibre.
If you have access to a given newspaper or magazine website (it may be free or paywalled) and Calibre has a "recipe" for it, it can "screenscrape" the website into an ebook magazine. It works very well for a lot of websites. |

Take a look at http://www.magzter.com/ who sell DRMed PDFs.
Barnes and Noble also sell magazines through their http://nook.co.uk/ store, in ePub format. |

I use Zinio on my tablets. The advantage is that you can install their app on any OS, AFAIK, so if you ever want go switch it up, you can. I must admit that I haven't read my subscription in many months, though. Books are more exciting

I generally use either Zinio or Flipboard. I've been a happy Zinio customer for years (they keep offering me a year's worth of car magazines for $5 and I keep grabbing them).
