Using the 505 in Australia

I was wondering if you can use the 505 in Australia, if you have your own content?

Do you need to be a US resident to activate the device, so you can transfer etc?

There's heaps of happy little wombats using the Sony here in Aussie, myself included. Explore other threads on this forum for help.

Using Sony Store in Australia

I'm using a Sony Reader here in Australia. I haven't had any problems claiming my 100 free books from the Sony store. The 100 free books only covers certain classics and the choice is fairly limited however. Shipping a Sony Reader from the US costs about half price of buying an Iliad from Dymocks.

Another Aussie user here (well my wife is the user, I'm the fixer - I can't get near the reader just for a read).

If you have your own content and need to convert it, tag it etc look at Libprs500. It works really well, especially converting microsoft reader (LIT) format. See the wiki entry here: https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Libprs500

I haven't activated the reader or looked at the Sony store. Charlieperry, I'd be interested to know how you claimed your free books - did you just activate through the SonyConnect software and go to the store?

If you are thinking of buying from the US, B&H Photovideo will sell one to you. They are a reputable store and very quick. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

Thumbs up Sony store

I think you need a US credit card to buy books from the Sony Store but anyone can claim/download the free classics.

hi, thanks for the B&H recommendation. I was searching for an e-retailer that is willing to ship to Singapore at an acceptable cost. Those ebays listing are way too expensive for international buyers

Another 505 user here (Sydney) I didn't have any problem(1) registering or claiming my free books, although I did have to claim to live in the states.

I've had no problem getting content from other sources and with convertlit and Libprs500 it's trivial to convert them to lrf for the reader.

I *love* the Reader I use it on the train every day for my commute and it's just magic.

1) Actually when registering the first time the Sony Connect site crashed part way through, and although it had credited my account with the 100 free classics, it hadn't actually registered the device. Then, when I registered the device properly, they gave me *another* 100 free classic. Technically a problem I suppose but *I'm* not seeing it that way

I got mine through amazon, shipping via vPOST USA is about S$70 in total. Quite okay in my opinion.

Hopefully the PRS will support DRM'ed adobe files soon so that we can buy ebooks from Dymocks.

Every time I've seen this thread highlighted in the forum list, I've been wanting to pop in here & say "Just hold it upside down"...

Sorry! :-)

We would but the publishers haven't started publishing the books upside down for the Australian market yet.

Actually you already can use the ebooks from Dymocks...
You just have to purchase the MS Reader versions - then use ConvertLit to 'downconvert' them to a non-drm'd format then use Librs500 to convert them to LRF and load onto the Reader.

It takes me about 10 minutes tops and it's a great way of buying ebooks since I don't have access to the Sony Connect store.

Cheers

Great, that's really useful to know.

Now all we need is sensible pricing from Dymocks...

Books in general in Australia are an absolute rip-off. We pay quite a significant premium over both the US and the UK. I'd love to start an ebook only bookstore and then do a deal with Bookeen or someone to import their reader. Anyone up for a joint venture?

You don't have to buy from Dymocks, go to the other online stores if you'd rather. Physical books are easy too, you just have the shipping costs to factor in.
