Desktop Hanging

My Desktop is hanging on 'Checking for updates...'. Running 3.1.4, installed for several days and had run ok before.

If I kill the update, it doesn't recognise the device when attached.

Don't know if it is related, but my factory reset via WiFi has hung, and the Kobo website is down :-(

edit: Luckily I still have a few paper books to read :-)
