Why does Calibre have to restart the computer every time it updates?
I'm just curious as to why every Calibre update has to have the pc restart in order to function properly. Any ideas why and if it can be fixed in the future to not need a restart similar to a web browser?
Thanks. |

I am running Mac 10.8.2 and always have to shutdown, and restart for every new update. if I try to run the update I get the Calibre is still in use, so a Shutdown is the only way around it.

I am running OS X 10.8.2 on two different machines, and I never have to restart my computer after installing an update.

Calibre does have a little icon when stays after you close it, at least in Windows. Maybe he isn't shutting that down.

Well, IS Calibre still in use? I know you normally instigate the update from within the program, but once you've got as far as the download page, Calibre can be closed.

NO, Calibre is NOT still in use, it is closed.
I get the download from within Calibre. It takes me to the download page and I download the latest update. I close the program, go to where it was downloaded on the computer and try to install. I then get the message that Calibre is still running. I then have to shutdown, and when it comes back up, I run install again and it works. Last edited by Bobioden; 12-19-2012 at 10:53 PM. |

I've never had to restart my PC either. What I do have to do, after clicking on the "X" in the upper right-hand corner of the program, is to then right-click on the calibre icon in the system tray at the bottom right hand corner of the computer screen and select "Quit" from the popup menu. Then I'm able to install the update with no problem.

When calibre is running full screen, Ctrl-Q will shut it down, or you can change the preferences in Preferences | Look and Feel | Main Interface and remove the check mark next to Enable system tray icon. |

A good reason TO enable the tray Icon is: You are running the content server and do not want to accidentally shut THAT down. To do that, you must use Ctrl-Q or the right-click on the Icon: 'Quit' |

Translation: Don't hit the yellow button at the top left (this minimises the app to the Dock); instead hit Command-Q to quit Calibre properly (Command is also known as the Apple key, or "splat", or "clover"). Alternative GUI command: File menu > Quit. If Calibre is still running after a proper Quit command, then open the Activity Monitor app to see what's going on. |

So sorry to have missed the O/S information provided.
Maybe a post along the lines of "And for Macintosh's here is how it's done" would not have ruffled my feathers .... And he (or is it she) could still change the preferences..... |

I'm running Windows 7 and the distribution from the official Calibre website. You can view my system specs here: http://speccy.piriform.com/results/f...gqBS4ykHAYXf6C
Also, I do completely shut down Calibre before initializing an update, so that's no the problem. :S Any other ideas why? |
