still another copyright question
I've another question about American copyrights: I'm familiar with the copyright extensions for 1929-1974, but does the US also abide by the 70 years after author's death? For example, I have a book published in early 1930s and the author died soon after in the late 1930s. His wife filed for an extension in the 1950s.
The author died more than 70 years ago, so I think the book is pd, but what about the filed extension period? Has that expired because of the 70 year since death, or does the 70 year period start with when the extension was filed in the 1950s rather than at the time of the author's demise? |

Here's a link to the copyright info page at Cornell. Assuming this information is correct and up-to-date it looks like your book falls under...
Date of Publication: 1923 through 1963 Conditions: Published with notice and the copyright was renewed Copyright Term: 95 years after publication date I'd guess the book won't enter the public domain for another 15 years or so depending on the actual publication date. Author + 70 years doesn't seem to apply in this case. |

No, your book is not in the US public domain. It's in the public domain pretty much everywhere else in the world, but not in the US.

carld, HarrT,
Thanks greatly for the info! I thought that the US was pushing Canada to raise it's copyrights to 70 years, but yet the US uses 95 years (??) |

The US has a "life+70" copyright law, but only from 1974 onwards, which means that it won't actually really come into force until 2045.
