Touch slow sync

Hi,
I am a newbie trying to understand the kobo touch. I plug in my kobo and it automatically starts syncing but sticks ( for hours ) when the bar is only a small way across. nothing else happens and I seem to have only a few pages of the books in my library which have actually gone onto my e reader.I cannot find the instruction " view or open files" anywhere. Is there a way I can shut off the desktop app and try another way to put books on my reader? I feel I am missing something so I hope someone will be kind enough to put me right on this. Thanks in advance

Calibre or dragging and dropping ebook-files to the main folder of the Kobo. Syncing with the desktop-application does not sync the books from your computer to your Kobo, only Kobo-bought books from the online Kobo-library.
