Kobo Tough died after upgrade

Hello,

I have tried to upgrade my Kobo Tough to 1.9.16 and the device is showing a black screen with "Restarting" in six languages and does not respond to anything anymore.
I have looked at my possibilities and found a SC card and made an bootable Linux usb (ubuntu 12.4). I have loaded the SD according instructions found in one of the forum posts but still no response other then the green flashing light.

I think the SD card is formatted and a partion is created (etc3) but this makes the SD not bootable.

Anybody any suggestion, idea's or instruction how to do it better ?
Has my Kobo died if it totally not responding to resets from the front and the rear ?

Thanks,
Jan

first thing to try would be to plug it into a charger for a few hours and see if it could be a flat battery that's causing the issue.

What firmware was the touch on in the first place? What version did a factory reset take it too?

Some of the newer revisions of the Touch seem to have an SD card internally instead of hard wired memory. Someone has opened one of these up and replace the SD card after coping partitions onto it. As Jabut hasn't said anything about opening his Touch up, I suspect he has formatted an SD card, but it in the external slot and hoped that would work. I haven't heard of that being done before.

For Jabut, was this a manual upgrade or automatic via the Kobo app?

And as dakini plug it in for a few hours and make sure the battery is charged before doing anything else. Then do a factory reset by:
- Slide the power button over and hold it for 30 seconds to ensure it is off and then release it
- Press and hold the Home button down and then slide the power button on.
- When the LED near the power button starts to flash, release the hold button.

If this works, when it finishes recovering, plug it into the PC and start the Kobo app to do the firmware upgrade.

I have the same problem.
I upgraded to the latest update via Wi-Fi. It downloaded and installed but when it restarted, it got stuck on the start screen. That is, the little black squares are still moving but I've waited for 30 minutes and nothing else happens.

I tried restarting it, a factory reset (via tiny button on the back) and plugging it into the computer. The computer does not recognise it (though it does charge - green LED on top). My battery is ok, I recharged just today. On my boyfriend's Kobo, everything worked fine.

Don't know what to do. Please help!

I did last update to KT via Wifi sync then it down loaded and installed update. When I tried to read a book after up date it would display message box not authorized. Sync with Kobo desktop. I connected KT to net with wifi then sync. After that I could again read books in library. At this time I had more than 2,000 side loaded books on SD card. Didn't take very long to install and get it working.

Make sure it is fully charged before updating firmware is always good idea.

I tried plugging it into the computer but my laptop doesn't recognise the Kobo - as it's always looping in that start-up smiley face screen.
I left it overnight and woke up to it still doing that.

Factory reset doesn't help. It restarts but just keeps looping away.

I have now installed the lateste desktop app via wine but it still doesn't recognise the Kobo, so I am now stuck with a machine I can watch loop away. My Kobo is fully charged, I have a little over 1000 books on there (maybe even fewer) and I really don't see why it worked on my boyfriend's device but not mine. I could seriously cry like a girl right now...

Wendy, if all you've done is push the pinhole reset button, you haven't done a factory reset.

Make sure the device is fully charged.
Remove any SD cards.
Hold the power button down for 15 seconds to ensure the device is off.
Hold down the Home button, and turn the device on while holding Home down.

You should see the "disco lights" (rapidly flashing white light, some colours) followed by a factory restart.

If this doesn't work, leave it a short while, then try again from the beginning.

@meeera: I didn't hold the Home-button long enough, that's why the factory reset didn't work. But I managed in the end and the disco lights came on.
Thanks for the tip!

Thankfully, we have a Windows laptop as well as our Linux computers, so plugging the factory reset Kobo in and doing the upgrade via the Desktop App ended up working. This seriously made me realise how much in love I am with my Kobo. A day without it would be torture!

Now I got the latest upgrade and everything works beautifully (even though I miss the little black lines indicating how far I am in a chapter).

Wendy: that's great! I'm glad things are working for you.

There is a plugin, if you feel confident enough, that brings back the chapter markers, strips the Wishlist from the front page, and changes the front page Discover link to Library. Probably worth not fooling around in there if you don't feel confident, but the install really is quite easy. Search this forum for details.
