Where are Kindle Highlights Stored?

Where and in what format are Kindle Highlights stored?

Specifically, I am hoping there is a single file that contains the shared highlights that come from anyone that has read the book. And how do I read the file? If its one of the files I think it is, it is not a text document -- I think.

Yup: in the .phl file alongside the book, or .phl file in the .sdr folder alongside the book on the Touch/PaperWhite.

any idea on how to open a PHL file? I see some conflicting advice on the net and I don't want to start installing random programs.

@emellaich: With a text/hex editor? Since, AFAIK, no one really bothered to play with the format much

IIRC, it's a relatively simple XML file with pointers to mobi positions.

I appreciate the help, but I had found the fileinfo page among others.

I tried the text thing. It didn't work. It also looked like garbage in a hex editor. It seems its not xml or a text editor would be able to read it.

Could it be some type of database file?

I can confirm that text editor doesnt work.

use the "file" command on it.
If no help, dump the first 256 bytes of it with hexedit.

Ah. It says gzipped compressed on a FAT filesystem. thank god for ipkg.

After gunziping, it is revealed to be an xml format.
