Turn off dictionary support

Hello,

With a Jailbroken Kindle eReader is there a way to turn off dictionary support altogether? I mean, without deleting the dictionaries for good?

I am interested in any info for K3, but I do not mind any knowledge on K4S, K4B, KT and/or PW models.

I never downloaded my dictionary on my 5.

I would just delete it. then in archives - re-download it?

either way - your dictionary will be there to get again from archives.
(via 3g is easiest obviously)

That probably would work. untested. but seems likely.

On my K3 I cannot delete dictionaries. At least not from the regular home screen, the way you would delete other books.

Load an "empty" dictionary. If you need one, send a mail to mathias matting. A german author and specialist with e-readers. Send him a PN from this forum, he is member here as well, he is always willing to give his support, great guy!

Thank you for the idea. Will do.

My point is: I do not use dictionary search, and in order to save some resources I stopped indexing and would like to block as well the dictionary feature.

Ah. good to know. then as indicated above a null dictionary would suffice.

I feel certain this has been covered elsewhere so perhaps have a quick look around. : ) Document your success when it is accomplished and I will give it a go also on my 3. thanks for the tip

I created my own empty dictionary following the method described here:

The file was recognized by my Kindle, but as a regular book, not as a dictionary.

Transfer the generated file (dict.mobi) to the documents folder on your Kindle
Press Menu
Select Settings
Press Menu again
Select Change Primary Dictionary
Select your new dictionary

If this is the only dictionary you have for this language you’re now done. If you have multiple dictionaries continue:

Press the menu key on your Kindle.
Select Settings.
Select edit next to Dictionaries on the second page.
Select the language you wish to set the dictionary for.
Select your new dictionary from the list.

No. The null dictionary does not appear in the list of available dictionaries. Only the two default dictionaries are there.

I suspect that my error is related to how the dict.txt file looks like for an "empty" dictionary. I am working on this.

Ok. Here is the news: I can create a dictionary with one entry like

a<TAB>

This almost empty dictionary is accepted by Kindle.

But I cannot create a (valid) dictionary with zero entries. Or a null dictionary means zero entries, not one. Any ideas here?

The dictionaries are stored in /opt/amazon/dict. That folder has the two azw files and an xml configuration file. Rename the dict folder into dict.orig, and create a new dict folder, with that configuration file only. Then reboot the machine. Strangely, this hides completely the "Change Primary Dictionary" option.

Later edit: Since "removing" the two awz files from /opt/amazon/dict hides the "Change Primary Dictionary" option, it follows that renaming /opt/amazon/dict to .../dict.orig is sufficient, we do not need to have a valid .../dict folder with the .project file inside.
