Talking Removing Amazon book recommendations from PW homescreen

Just found a way to remove the Amazon book recommendations from the PW's home screen! This was bugging me a lot. Just go to Parental Controls in Device options and disable the Kindle store.

There is already a thread on this solution.

I was considering pointing that out too, but to be fair somebody w/ only 19 posts probably doesn't read these forums as much as us addicts do and might not have caught that. It's a useful tip, evidenced by solitarywolf's response.

I personally don't see what the big deal is... I go to my home screen about once every few days for about 30 seconds, long enough to find and open my next book.

Thanks for this tip (even if it is a repeat) - having ordered the "without ads" version I was a little annoyed that I still effectively got ads with book recommendations.

@twowheels: the main reason I have for wanting to turn it off is to see more of my library on the home screen.

One annoying thing about this tip though is that to actually get in to the store it's not just a simple matter of flipping a switch - you have to turn off the parental controls and enter a password, then to reactivate the tip (or deactivate the recomendations) you have to activate parental controls and enter the password twice. For me that's 12 taps - kind of a pain. Hopefully Amazon will update the firmware to allow this as a simple option to deactivate without the need for parental controls.

The only issue I found is that with parental controls, I claim any of the special offers either...have to re-enable to store to do it.

Granted, but my point was that the comparative amount of time that I spend on the home screen vs. in a book is so small that I really honestly don't see what the big deal is. I thin I've seen my home screen twice other than the dozen or so times that I've gone there to show people how the PW works...

Yeah, I don't just go from one book to another though. I read the paper on the Kindle in the morning, then usually a book at night. And I am usually reading one fiction and one nonfiction at the same time. I also have a tendency to "collect" samples of books that I'm interested in reading, and use that as my list of books to choose from, so I browse through before choosing my next book. As a result I spend a good bit of time on the home page, and I find it nice to be able to see more of my collection when I do. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

Like Weatherman, I visit the home screen a lot more frequently than someone who only uses the Kindle to read books. I treat the Kindle as a virtual printer, where I use the Send to Kindle extension for any articles that would take more than a couple of minutes to read. Fortunately, I actually prefer List View, since covers take up too much space.
