It doesn't look like a scratch...?

OK, first off... This is an out-of-warrenty Kindle Keyboard that I'm replacing with a Paperwhite next year. Already talked to Amazon, the only thing they told me was that I could get a discount replacement or a refurbished Kindle Touch.

So, I seem to have this spot on my screen... It's ANNOYING as it's super, super noticeable. I don't know if it's ink (but it doesn't go away when I turn the screen on and off), or if it's something else.

I tried erasing it, just to make sure it wasn't a pencil mark.

Screen ding. If you can see it even if it is off.

Do not try Sandpaper!

Yeah, that was my third guess. Of all places it had to be THERE. Oh well.

Yep. I have a small splotch like that on my K2. I used my fingernail to try to remove some dust, and got the little splotch.

My T1 has 2 of those spots on the screen. I don't know how I did that, but it is indeed irritating. I replaced it with a T2 and a new Kindle tough

It looks like it might be the equivalent of stuck pixels for LCD screens (not sure what it's called in the e-ink world). I had a replacement Kindle Keyboard sent to me earlier this year and while my old KK's screen was flawless, the replacement had noticeable "spots" around the screen. It looked like someone sprinkled a tiny bit of dust onto it. I actually kept my old KK because of this.

It's stuck pixels. eInk can get these. There is a few threads here about this happening.

Sorry about your Kindle

It looks like a burst "capsule" on the eInk screen. Basically, the liquid has escaped from one the capsules inside the screen which display the image. There's no fix, other than to replace the screen (which isn't economic to do).

If anybody cares about technical details:
Spoiler:
Each pixel is composed of many of those capsules (called "beads" in some of the eink documentation). Each bead is filled with oil and many tiny black and white oppositely charged particles. One type of eink used zinc oxide for the white particles. An electric field placed across the beads causes the particles to move to the front and back surfaces depending on their color. An alternating current waveform is used to minimize artifacts of the electric field affecting nearby pixels other than the addressed pixel, and also to create various shades of gray with mixtures of black and white particles. Because of that, you can see a (silvery) negative image on the back surface of the eink glass if you remove it from its protective back support.

If a bead is damaged, the oil can leak around adjacent beads, carrying its colored particles with it, resulting in that splotch as shown above.

EDIT: The oil in the beads also explains why the eink displays are slower with more ghosting when they are cold (higher viscosity). The ideal operating temperature is 25C/78F, but there is some degree of temperature compensation in the eink firmware.

Thanks everyone. I'll just wait it out. I have my KF anyway.

And thank you for the technical note. That's good to know!

There's a nice picture on eInk's site: http://www.eink.com/technology_pop_ink.html (from http://www.eink.com/technology.html)

So, in order for this NOT to happen again, what are some suggestions? Besides putting on a screen protector?

Even with a screen protector, that kind of damage can happen. If the screen is hit with anything even coming close to being pointy. Anything that puts force into a small area.

Sorta like women in high pointy heels, when they walk, the heels can impact the floor at over 1000 psi.

A screen protector can help some, but not very much to prevent that kind of damage in the right circumstances.
