[912] PB 912 has a SIM card slot

I just broke my PB 912 :-(

Opening it to see if it is fixable (looks not), I see a SIM card slot. It is behind the battery, so quite easily accessible, but there seems to be nothing to hold a SIM card pressed against the contacts.

Has anyone (with a live PB 912) tried using this slot? (for example using cardboard to hold the card in place).

An unrelated question, why I'm pondering if I will buy a replacement, and which one: is there any progress on the rooting front? (If the device accepts a firmware downgrade to 2.1.1, that's fine with me).
