On sale!
First, a little background.
In Sweden we have a nationwide week of books sales in February. It used to be a time that book sellers could empty out their shelves and make room for the new titles that would be introduced in spring. Nowadays it is a much more contrived affair. Publishers print up special hard cover versions on cheap paper (pulp even?) and sell them for their normal price with 50 % off. It is harder to find some titillating bargains these days. Having said that, I noticed that when Amazon released their Ed McBain series I picked up everything I could, because it was so cheap. But, I have actually only read one of them. I just couldn't refuse a good bargain. Do you think it is easier getting sucked in by marketing like that because there is no "resistance" to an eBook bargain? You don't have to get into the car, find the books, stand in line, carry of your purchases, pay a parking ticket and schlep it all back home. You just have to click. Are we all suckers? |

Yes, I'm a sucker for a good price on lots of stuff I like, and particularly for ebooks. I'll never get them all read before I die.

Yes. I just "bought" an ebook from Amazon for $0.00. I'm now in chapter two and am seriously considering deleting it.

I am trying to only buy ebooks that I will read soon. I want to avoid the thing that happened with paper books with thousands of books unread and 6 different prioritized queues for reading the books. Now I have one queue with ebooks containing approximately 30 books.

Isn't there an old expression; "You get what you pay for"?

I'm currently rereading the JD Robb series from books 1-37, I have more than 100 bought but not read ebooks, and I had decided not to buy more until I finished what I had. But since Amazon started discounting again I've bought about 6 more, mostly filling in series of favorite authors and replacing some of my paper books. The lower prices make a definite difference in my buying.

It's not a truism though, but a platitude.
Often you get far less than you pay for. When it was free, you don't feel guilt if you just get rid of it, whereas if you spent money you might feel constrained to plow through regardless. |
