Yes, the touch screen uses infrared light just above the screen's surface. So any object big enough will block the light and let the device know something is there.

So a cheap stylus, finger, piece of wood, pretty much anything will work. I've used the eraser end of a pencil a couple of times.

Yes. Within the book, there is a list of highlights and notes for that book. Outside the book, there is a listing of all the notes across all the books in your library. You can filter based on a certain type of note (bookmark, handwriting, or highlight), or just view them all.

This is a qualified "maybe". Calibre doesn't support this as far as I know, but the Sony Reader software will do this. Adobe Digital Editions used to do this for highlights and bookmarks (not handwriting) on older devices, but I don't know if it still works on the T1/T2.

I found it adequate enough to let me use Sony eBook readers to proofread an OPF and make changes, though.

As an FYI, the manual is publicly available and covers the first two questions. When researching a product, I usually read through the manual for the bits I am unclear on before I purchase so I know how it works.
