Page number on cover

Hi

Well, so far calibre looks like it's exactly what I need - I don't need much!

I'm converting from an htm file to ePub for use via Lulu (their converter is really quite limited, even for my simple file)

I added the cover, which looks very good, except that the page number appears on the bottom (i.e. 1 of 311) . I can't seem to find any place that excludes the cover from the numbering.

Also, the second page (2 of 311) which has the title and copyright thinks it's two pages long as it's followed by a blank page also numbered 2 of 311

Any ideas?

Calibre does not number pages. Is Lulu doing this?

Sigil has a selection to declare the pages purpose (Symantics).
Cover, copyright-page... . those appear in the <guide> section of the (internal) OPF file

Haven't run it through Lulu yet.
I'm using Word 2007, save as filtered web page and then convert in calibre.

It must be picking up page number from the Word doc. Word isn't exactly clever about web documents of any sort.

So if you WANT page numbers in a caliber ePub you're out of luck?

(See? I knew it was too easy)

EPUB has no concept of a Page Number because of rescaling would make them wrong , anyway.

You use HTML anchors and links instead.
Now you can jump to any place (in the document) , regardless of scale

Why would you want page numbers in an ePub? HOW would you get page numbers for an ePub? What's a "page?"--the amount that shows up on screen? 6" screen? 5"? IPhone?

ADE has a system for calculating "page numbers" in ePub based on kb; it's 3-5 pages on my PRS-505 screen. (On the small default font.) (Depending on how much dialogue vs long descriptive paragraphs.)

Kindles list "locations," but that's not the same as pages. I'm not sure if they're also calculated by filesize rather than something based on character count/text arrangement on the screen.

"Pages" is not entirely compatible with html-based media.

Doh! didn't even think of that. Any book displayed on my Sony has page numbers. So I'm guessing that Sony puts those there, rather than whoever created the ePub that I'm reading.

Weird, that.
Maybe then I don't need to worry that there is a page number on my cover page!

(BTW, I actually like page numbers. Am I halfway through the book? Almost done? When is the bleepin action starting

Yeah, Sony does that. I love it. For epubs, it's based on the ADE calculation; for RTF, it's based on calculating screens-sized pages, and changes when you resize the text.

Other readers use different methods--some show a percentage; some just have an unlabeled progress bar; I suspect some make it downright difficult to sort out where you are in the book.

Do you happen to have a 505 and did you happen to flash it to get the clock on the bottom?

Not sure - don't have it with me.
If there is a clock I've never seen/used it. Did not have to flash it. I will check the settings when I get home.
